Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I had a question about the iodine skin patch test...the one where you put iodine tincture the size of a quarter on your stomach and watch if it disappears. Does anyone know if this is a valid test for evaluating if one is iodine deficient or not. I was told that if you are not deficient the iodine will stay in place and dark. If deficient, the iodine will disappear in less than 24 hours. Would love to hear what others have read or know about this test. Thanks, Deb
Guest guest
, I have not come across this in my practice, but in my years of inpatient nursing, we'd often see people who listed iodine as one of their allergies. It is a quite common allergy for some reason, and if one made an error and put iodine on them.....big skin reactions. Plenty of opportunity to swash around betadine and iodine solutions in the hospital. Hard to say without seeing it, but it sounds like what you ran into. Who knew, right?? VEry valuable information for her if that is what it is. No other reactions at other times in her life? ON the other hand, maybe that was a positive iodine skin test and you now load her with iodine as a deficit....AND YOU KILL HER!!!!! NEWSFlash!!! Local Lake Oswego Chiropractor caught staining teenagers with iodine. When interviewed, he declined comment but said "I like the color of eggplant". So............err on the side of caution and call Standard Process and ask one of their hired lecturers....you know, Dr. _________, who is the nutritional expert, what the sensitivity and specificity is and what kind of reactions experienced over the years. Don White, RN, DC Standard Process touts the iodine on the skin- see how long to absorb test is a good screening test.Others say, not so accurate. We’ve been trying it on interested patients. On one 19 year old gal the iodine stain became darker and darker until it was almost eggplant colored in 2 minutes. She also said it stung. We’re thinking something like urticaria( Hives are raised, often itchy, red welts on the surface of the skin. They are usually an allergic reaction to food or medicine.
