Wait Time

Hi Amy

I'm not sure what the wait is for. I did ask 2 doctors about it &

they agreed that liver biopsy results take nearly 2 weeks. I live in

Canada where we have one tier socialized medicine. Recent cut backs

could cause a backlogging of tests and make this wait inevitable. The

blood test which determined the AIH took a month. By that time, I had

forgotten all about it - wondered why the gastro wanted to see me

again. Surprise!

It was my choice to wait a while because I was trying to find a time that I would have recovery time in terms of when my busy work times are. So I decided last summer that I would want it in January. I also was having surgery out of state because of the type of appliance I wanted and wanting to go back to my hometown and my old OS. So I saw him the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and he gave the go ahead to have the surgery January 9. I really picked the date based on my schedule and when he did surgeries.

He would have done it within the month if I wanted.

This question is for everyone. I am curious, what was the average wait time for surgery, between the time you and your dr. made the determination to proceed with your joint replacement surgery, and the time it was performed? I had to wait just under a month.

I was originally given a 6 week wait time for surgery but I was persistent in calling the surgical coordinator so I managed to get put into a slot that opened up and I think it was about 2 weeks from the date I finalized -- That was just about enough time to get the necessary physicals, blood work and also to try and get stuff lined up for after surgery. My initial consult with an OS was in the first week of February and my surgery was March 8th -- There was really no point in my procrastinating as my pain level was bad -- even I could diagnose that I had no cartilage left from the X-Ray -- my walk consisted of lurching although I hadn't progressed to a cane or walker -- really there was no point in delaying surgery for any reason while I tried any stop gap measures. For what it's worth, I had the anterior approach with a Profx table -- the recovery is considerably easier than with the posterior or other approaches.Luckily I still had lots of strength in my non-surgical leg as it had taken up most of the work pre-surgery as I became increasingly disabled -- It does help to see what it likes to move around your house disabled -- and/or to get up from chairs using one's arms and legs etc.HelenOn Apr 30, 2007, at 9:38 AM, Don wrote:My wait time was four or five months because my doctor was all bookedup. I guess you could gage that length of time on how good he is. BTW near as I could tell the does two to three operations per day andoperates about two to three days a week. The first available date was four months out. He is very busy but I

felt fortunate to have him do my surgery. Gave me time to prepare. I

was also glad it ended up being in the winter since now at three

months I am out in the garden, enjoying my new hip.
