Firstly you need to know that most sites that recommend these things are also selling them. I am familiar with other sites that recommend liver detoxing, parasite cleansing and psyllium and bentonite clay shakes. That is why I started this group in April of this year. Bentonite clay is the trade name for a commercial type of clay which uses the Smectite group of clays, called montmorillonite clay. The clay is intended to clean the bowels, which I've stated before doesn't make sense because the bowel is where the waste products of the body are eliminated. But also bentonite contains aluminum like Zack said. Bentonite clay is also intended to provide minerals to the body - it contains about 61 types of minerals. A much safer and healthy way to provide the body with minerals is with a good ocean sea salt like Celtic which contains over 80 minerals. It also aids digestion by increasing the production of hydrochloric acid, and it helps draw nutrients out of foods. I got turned off bentonite clay most when I found out humans have been poisoned by chronic ingestion of it, with symptoms such as muscle pain, muscle rheumatism, muscle weakness and lethargy, along with hypokalemia (an abnormally low concentration of potassium in the blood) and iron deficiency resulting in a type of anemia. Also it is possible for bentonite clay to come from land areas which have been toxic dumps. Bentonite clay beds are commonly used for dumping such toxic wastes because the layer of bentonite confines it and acts as an impervious barrier to the passage of water. Also inhaling the powder is very dangerous because it contains silica dust, which when inhaled causes respiratory problems. To avoid contact with the dust, it in an enclosed space, use of a mask or extraction fan is important. About the parasite cleanse - while some people may need to rid themselves of parasites, particularly if they have travelled abroad, most people don't need to be too concerned about them. If you feel you have parasites it is important to obtain proper stool tests to identify which kind they are. Then they can be treated specifically with the correct herb. However, to take all of the herbs recommended by Dr. " just in case " you have parasites is not a wise idea. There is a very long list of herbs that should not be used during pregnancy or by women who " could " become pregnant. One is used for the parasite cleanse " Wormwood " which is a uterine stimulant and may also cause birth defects. You can read this list at http://curezone.com/cleanse/enema/ The site even cautions people about taking herbs because some may not agree with you and can cause adverse reactions. This is why single herbs are better to take than a combination which is often included in cleansing formulas. I've left the liver detox to the last for a reason. My sister is a Registered Nurse and I asked her about whether the liver has such stones. She'd never heard of such a thing. But for argument's sake even if there were such stones in the liver, (we do know gallstones exist) the size of the bile duct makes it totally physically impossible to pass the size of stones that are claimed at these sites without blocking the bile duct, no matter how much epsoms salts you take to supposedly " relax " the bile duct. The size of the bile duct is about 2.5 centimeters. Can you imagine a 1 inch stone passing through it? I can't either. I believe those " supposed " stones are nothing more than " soapstones " created in the intestines by the action of the olive oil with the apple juice or lemon juice and epsom salts. The better treatment for gallstones is to dissolve them. The body can actually dissolve them quite nicely with bile acids. Good fats are used by the liver to make cholesterol which is made into bile acids. To detoxify the liver and help it become less congested do coffee enemas, dry skin brushing, reflexology, etc. I hope that helps Carol.
