News: Most adults misuse medications

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Bombarded with prescriptions and lured by the

health promises of over-the-counter drugs and herbal remedies, many people

appear to be misusing the treatments they hope will heal them, research

suggests.

In a study of about 300 patients of primary care doctors and cardiologists,

investigators found that 76% had either stopped taking prescribed drugs, were

not taking the correct dose, or were using medications their doctors were

unaware of. Patients aged 40 and older were more likely than younger patients

to have such discrepancies.
