Guest guest
What is the back to sleep campaign? That is cool about the study! I wonder if any hospital in VA is participating? I am glad that he was supportive of the casting. Noelle (12-2-01)Ian (8-15-04) scoliosis study Forgot to mention - Dr. Emans asked us if we would participate in an early onset scoliosis study that is currently being done in 20-30 hospitals around the country. They just want to follow Jake's treatment and progress for the next 10-15 years. I consented. Also Dr. Emans says the country is seeing an increase in infantile scoliosis cases, and he is of the believe that it is largely because of the "Back to Sleep" campaign to prevent SIDS. I know a lot of us have already heard/read that. Just wanted you to know he thought. mom to and Jake Messenger with Voice. PC-to-Phone calls for ridiculously low rates. Guest guest
"Back to Sleep" campaign is where docs firmly recommend putting your baby to sleep on his/her back to prevent the chance of SIDS. Even Pampers prints "back to sleep" on their swaddlers diapers! Claflin <noellesmommy@...> wrote: What is the back to sleep campaign? That is cool about the study! Guest guest
Why does he think sleeping on their back contributes to scoli? Very interesting! Guest guest
He's not the only one. I've seen it in other papers as well. Not sure about the specifics, mom to and Jake Claflin <noellesmommy@...> wrote: Why does he think sleeping on their back contributes to scoli? Very interesting! Guest guest
Dear Cam and group, I just went through the questions for the study on the phone with their rep, probably took twenty minutes, mostly because both me and my daughter are affected by scoliosis. They prefer you call them to filling the questions out online. My being adopted and having no access to my family history wasn't a problem for them, would have been nice, but didn't exclude me. They keep all DNA sample private, and will destroy the info at the end of the study or you can give permission for them to use it beyond that point for future studies. As I have a child affected, and a two year old granddaughter who we will have to watch carefullly for signs, it would be so wonderful if they can develope a test through this work who can tell if a child will be affected and to what degree. Hope many of will and have participated, worthwhile I think! Colorado Springs Scoliosis Study Progress Date: Fri, 28 Sep 2007 08:06:33 -0600 From: "VeeAnn Argyle" <veeannaxialbiotech> To: cammaltby Thank you for support and enthusiasm in our scoliosis research study. As you may know, we are working on the development of a genetic test for scoliosis and are currently in the validation part of this process. To reach this goal, we need a large group of participants with all types and severities of scoliosis. This includes those who were told by a doctor that they have scoliosis but did not require any treatment as well as those who needed a brace or surgery for scoliosis. Other than the individual's time, there is no cost to participate in this study. We would ask for a short questionnaire (less than 10 minutes) and a saliva DNA sample from a kit mailed to their home. If you have friends, family members, or acquaintances with scoliosis, please invite them to contact us regarding the study. They can reach one of our family studies researchers by calling toll-free at 888-992-9425 and dial 8 for Genetic Studies. They can also complete the questionnaire through our secure website at http://www.axialbiotech.com/participate.html. Thank you again for your participation. Guest guest
I've also done the questionaire, and spoke with Alina at Axial Biotech today. An interesting tidbit I picked up was that non-affected siblings used to be included, but they are no longer being asked to participate unless they have a child with scoliosis. So I'm guessing the non-scolis aren't carrying those markers. Sharon PS: My parents have both agreed to participate, and I've emailed information to my siblings with scoliosis, though I have no word back from them yet. [ ] scoliosis study Cam, thanks for the reminder on that study last week. I filled out the questionnaire and both me and my daughter are going to spit in the cup when it arrives. She did tell me they were finding some genetic markers so it is well worth it. Peggy
