That's what she calls it. Any info Would be greatly appriecated Thanks Kathy Kathy, I'm very sorry to hear about your mother. I know this is a hard time for you both. Lactulose is a treatment that's very useful for some kinds and stages of liver disease. It is used to lower ammonia levels, and it works as a laxative. People have commented that they found having cool pre-packaged wipes available made them more comfortable during this treatment. I won't comment more on this type of treatment, as I have no experience with it and know only what I've read here. You say the doctor says there is nothing that can be done for her. Can you get a second opinion on whether there is some treatment that would at least make her more comfortable? I can tell you some things that helped for me on itching. Atarax, a prescription drug, helps itching. Be sure she gets a high enough dosage to be effective. Other people have used a lotion for topical relief; I think it's called Sartan. Someone probably will come up with the exact name for you. Cornstarch, from the grocery store, often calmed my skin. Don't use baby powder, which has talc in it; the talc feels like gravel to itchey skin. Also, Gold Bond and other medicated anti-itch powders contain ingredients that made them hurt dreadfully. I bought a lambswool duster and flicked it over my skin when I wanted to dig my nails in and claw. It did help. Staying cool and using smooth sheets and loose nightclothing helps. Someone had given me a couple of silk knit nightgowns from Chambers catalog, in a size larger than I usually wear. They helped a lot, as they were smoother and softer than my sheets. Best wishes. Guest guest
Kathy - I was treated with Lactulose after coming out of the coma. This was also because the amonia levels in my brain had grown to incredibly high livels and made everything extremely fuzzy for me. I know that it is an awful medication to endure and trust me, it is even worse when you are tied to a bed with a tube down your throat. BUT it does work wonderfully and keeping those levels stabilized. I also know that Cheryl and Randy had experience with the Lactulose before Randy's transplant and they could probably be of more help. Good luck with the questions and remember to KEEP ASKING QUESTIONS!!! You deserve answers. Peace
Guest guest
Hi Kathy, My brother is on something called laxalose. It makes him run to the bathroom, but it is supposed to prevent the ammonia problems. Also, they said that controlling his protein intake will help too. I told him he better start carrying extra clothes !!! Lella
