Hi Jane...

I'm hardly a remodeling expert :-) But, I would guess that standing

on ceramic tile for any length of time would be hard on just about

anyone's back. My floors are wood.

Bonnie and I had an email conversation a few weeks ago, and she asked

what sorts of appliances I was putting in, that were spine friendly.

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten around to responding, so I'll post on

that subject here. I put in dishwasher drawers. I've only used the

top drawer, but it's really wonderful not to have to bend down to

place or retrieve dishes. My refrigerator has french doors with a

bottom freezer. Since it's not installed yet, I can't tell how it

will be. I'm not replacing my cabinets, but if I was, I would

definitely put in slide out drawers in all of the lower cabinets.

Bonnie, I'm delighted that your injections are working! :-)

Hi Jane, ,

, Thanks for the good wishes. It certainly feels good to feel good. :-)

I'm no kitchen expert either, but I know that ceramic floors are awful for one's back. Other than cement, I can't think of anything worse for your back. When our house was built a few years ago, I had slide-out shelves put in most of the bottom cabinets. Of course, I should have done it in all of them. If I were doing it today, I would put in slide-out drawers instead of lower cabinets. We have a wall oven and the handle is about shoulder height. Oh, how I love not having to bend to get food in and out of the oven! And I have a microwave over the range; again, no bending. I've seen so many kitchen magazine make-over articles featuring under- the-counter ovens and microwaves. Whoever thought of that is very young and has a very strong, healthy back. I love the idea of dishwasher drawers. A waste bin that automatically pulls out as you open the door under the sink will be a must in my next kitchen. I should have raised the counters two inches. And I'd go for the bottom freezer. Failing that, pullout bins in the freezer and pullout shelves in the fridge are very helpful. I'd love a sink very near the stove-top, to fill and empty pots without carrying them far. I have a computer desk in my kitchen - I love that set-up. It's great for someone who can't sit or stand for very long. I can read emails as I cook. :-)

I love talking kitchens.

Bonnie

You didn't ask me but...

My house is entirely wood (except one bathroom and the kitchen). The

wood is far better under foot. I also have a bottom-mount freezer

refrigerator and a cooktop with a built-in oven and microwave.

Before the oven and microwave were installed, I took a grease pencil

and marked as low as I could comfortably reach to put something in

the oven (without bending) and as high as I could comfortably reach.

Between those two marks is where the oven and microwave were put. It

is so nice to be able to continue to cook without help. On occasion,

I have to ask for help with getting things in/out of the oven

(because of weight), but most of the time I can cook independently.

All of my lower cabinets have pull-out shelving. This is great

because I can use my feet (sorry if that is gross ot anyone) to pull

the shelves out...one of the smartest things I've ever done! If

anyone is considering kitchen (or any room) revisions, this site has

some great ideas...
