Guest guest
Dr Hertoghe chose to put me on Medrol (synthetic hydrocortisone) although he believes that natural cortisone provides better relief for mental complaints like fatigue, depression etc. However, he told me, natural hydrocortisone also favors weight gain in many hypothyroid patients. Since I gained about 40 pounds (20 kgs) when I was hypo and have had some problems getting rid of it, he preferred to put me on synthetic hydrocortisone. For the first three or four months it worked wonders, but then the effects began to wear off. Has anyone else experienced this? Has anyone here had an opportunity to try both natural cortisone (Cortef) and synthetic hydrocortisone like Prednisolone or Medrol? It would be interesting to know which one worked best for you. Unfortunately, it does not seem possible to order Cortef when you live in Europe...the Internet pharmacies who carry it all require a prescription. Those who do not claim they sell Cortef, but once you are about to order you realize that they are actually selling Prednisolone and calling it Cortef...and I want natural cortisone, not the synthetic version of it! Guest guest
Hi Catarina, I take cortef and have not tried prednisone or others - I also found that the effects wore off after a while - but I have that happen with nearly everything - I attribute it to mercury toxicity which affects absorption of nutrients as well as hormones - I do feel that the 10mg per day that I take of cortef helps support my tired adrenals - I took 20 - 40mg for nine months last year - It wasn't miraculous for me but I still feel it is helping me in a less obvious way. Sorry to be vague on this - its the best I can do. I don't think it has made any difference to my weight one way or the other - I was off it for many months and gained a kilo anyway. I find that time release T3 is the best for depression for me. I buy from Masters Marketing - don't know if they ship to Europe. I'm in Australia. Guest guest
I started on 5 mg Cortef in Oct, worked up to 20 mg starting Dec 1st, so have been on 20 mg. for one month now. I was thinking it might be helping my Fibromyalgia pain, but honestly, I don't think it's done anything at all yet. Maybe it takes more time-- I sure hope that's it. But so far, I can't say anything has changed much re. the pain-- which was what I wanted the Cortef to help. I really don't know how much I weigh, and can honestly say I don't care. I just want to walk again, without canes, without my walker, without pain. On Christmas Eve, my husband inadvertently kicked my left heel, which pushed my leg outwards about two inches. That gave me so much pain, I was in tears. 2006 will be better. Guest guest
Gail, I'm sorry to hear that - I also didn't get pain relief from it - perhaps it will be the T3 after all that you need more of. kerry Cortef vs Prednisolone > > > Dr Hertoghe chose to put me on Medrol (synthetic hydrocortisone) > although he believes that natural cortisone provides better relief for > mental complaints like fatigue, depression etc. However, he told me, > natural hydrocortisone also favors weight gain in many hypothyroid > patients. Guest guest
Aw, thanks Kerry. I just get feeling sorry for myself occasionally, but I always get over that. There are many diseases more painful than this, which have no hope of resolving, so I should remember that. Looking on the bright side, if I don't move, I don't hurt. A friend just phoned to " talk dog " for a few minutes--we're currently grading a litter-- and that is always an upper for me. So now I feel more cheerful, and I know I will get better. Yes, larger amounts of T3 is on my list for talking to the doctor about, next appointment in a couple of weeks. I've already run off some information from Dr. Lowe. I don't intend to give up, ever.
