Myelogram Next Tuesday

Hi Group, Many of you have answered my recent post regarding my phobic dread of having my spine punctured for a myelogram. Thanks for the support and response from all... Nonetheless, I am terrified and dread next tues. 2/20. I requested to have IV sedation but practically no-one does the test with it and I was told by several hospitals I'd need a complete medical clearance and pre-tests done and have my surgeon order it. What red tape!! I've had tooth extractions, oral surgeries, colonoscopy, and facet/SI pain injections all done under IV sedation, with no side-effects. I just don't understand why it's such a deal to get it for a myelo. So the surgeon's nurse sent me a Rx for valium to take prior to procedure which I will be dosing up on. Pls keep your fingers crossed for me... Thnx Rob

I'm sorry to hear about all of the trouble they were making you go

through to get IV sedation. The technician that helped do my

myelogram mentioned to me that not many people get sedated for it,

but then he made the comment that he'd want it if he ever got one

done I'm glad to hear that you were able to get an rx for

valium. I honestly think that with the right radiologist it would

be fine to get it done with no sedation, but if you are anxious

about it (which I definately was my 2nd time, and you clearly are as

well!), then by all means, it should be your right to be made more

relaxed and comfortable during the procedure. Don't let anyone

there make you feel bad for having it. After all, THEY aren't the

ones having all of these procedures done. Just smile to yourself

and think how wonderful it will be to not remember much of what is

happening

FOLLOW-UP TO MY ATTACHED POST... Hi Folks! Well I just want to report I did have my Myelogram yesterday and it went better than I would have expected... I took 2 tablets Valium 10 mg each and they also gave me a shot of Dilaudid in the hospital. Along with the local anesthetic I felt no pain which is just the way I wanted it. The only downside to the whole experience was the nausea side-effect from the dilaudid. I had this lingering high most of the day and the nausea caused me to visit the bowl a few times. Other than that, my dreaded fear of spinal punctures were minimized. The procedure was performed by a very professional, kind radiologist and staff who couldn't do enough for me. So with this out of the way it on to the pre-ops in a few weeks and surgery in a month. Thanks for reading; will continue my posts... Best to

Hi !

Glad you got through your procedure relatively unscathed. I don't think

the reaction to the dilaudid is all that uncommon..but you might want

to mention it to your doctor since they will likely be using morphine

products on you in your post surgical period. I am not sure what they

will do with the info...but they might not use that particular

formulation on you. Throwing up during the first 48-72 after surgery is

almost not a possibility!

Hi , Thanks for your good wishes. I guess Dr. Boachie will evaluate the myelo results and discuss with me at my pre-surg consult on 3/12. The remaining pre-op tests are fairly routine and will be done 3/15. Time sure is flying as I count-down the remaining 4 weeks. Take care...
