Guest guest
touched a nerve. The one that many of us have based on too many years being told .... just chew more.... eat slower .... eat more healthy....when it takes hours for liquid to get from mouth to stomach, and then only if the stomach is willing. It is not very useful. Trying to make it count I think we all do.... but most times just trying to make it through another day without fainting from low blood sugar can be a trial. Some meals are a piece of chocolate and some Altoids so that I can drive home. Most healthy foods don't go down. If you can eat fish & salad then I am very jealous. I don't find we are arguing over everything on this site. I find it extremely supportive and helpful. The biggest support is finding a place where people are not judgmental on how we as A's try to make it through. That was until 's email. I am glad he can preach on the joys of a healthy diet, some of us just aren't that lucky. So how about we just accept that we are all at different stages of this tough disease. your lecture was probably well meant but obviously not well received. P.S. If I was diabetic or had high blood pressure nobody would tell me it was in my head and then try to get me to eat something I can't. > STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Listen to what is saying I repeat If we > found out we were Diabetic or had High Blood pressure Our diet and way of > life would have to change SOOOO Having the big " A' means changing Our life > style Which means eating We must eat wisely And make every bite count > Does that sound so bad??? As for being obese That isn't good PERIOD Dear > God Must we argue over everything If you were my kids I would say go to > your room And cool off Yes obese and Achalasia Don't go together > Who went for dinner again tonight Had a cup of creamed soup Broiled flounder Baked potatoes Salad plain didn't finish all But enough OH had a cup of tea Which is hard to go down Ate at 5 Now to bed
Guest guest
Hello, . >P.S. If I was diabetic or had high blood pressure nobody would tell >me it was in my head and then try to get me to eat something I can't. Good point. It got me thinking. If you were diabetic your doctor would tell you needed to be on a special diet. There would be medical web sites that would tell what kind of diet to be on. And there would also be sites providing links to research articles about studies on the effects of diet on diabetes. If you had high blood pressure your doctor would tell you needed to be on a special diet. There would be medical web sites that would tell what kind of diet to be on. And there would also be sites providing links to research articles about studies on the effects of diet on high blood pressure. I thought I would list all the site I can find that tell what kind of diet achalasics should be on to reduce their symptoms, and the sites that show the research for the diet. (I am talking about what and how much to eat, not when to eat. Also, this is not about what is easy to get down, but what makes achalasia better.) I will also list all those sites that discuss how obesity makes achalasia worse and the sites that show the research on it. So, here they are: Sites with diet advice for Achalasics: (Ooops! I couldn't find any) Sites with research supporting the diet: (Ooops! I couldn't find any) Sites that discuss the problem of being obese with achalasia: (Ooops! I couldn't find any) Sites with research about being obese with achalasia: (Ooops! I couldn't find any) I didn't get to every achalasia site, but I tried a number of search set ups I thought would bring them up and got tired of looking. Maybe someone who believes in this stuff can show us where we can get the information. Or maybe it is just " gossip? " Rats! I was so hoping the one week guaranteed results diet would work for me, but it is looking like one of those, " if it sounds to good to be true " things. notan

Guest guest
I ask the question ages ago about how many of us were overweight and had trouble with weight If at all,The majority had replied that they were and had always had weight problems.I tend to agree with on this one I think that if you do as he suggests it just may help us.. Guest guest
Most healthy foods don't go down. If you can eat fish & salad then I am very jealous.+++++++ One of the reasons I stay on this list is the joy of reading things like the above and knowing I am not alone. Until I got here I knew nobody with A. People repeatedly over the years have asked me what I can eat. I explain my concept of the disease carefully and they still don't get it. I can pretty much eat whatever goes down, and some things I don't even try. Those nummy raw vegetables trays I can't do, I have tried and choked on raw broccoli or carrots, can't chew them well enough to get down. I have false teeth, too. Salad is a disaster unless it is chock full of ham and cheese, etc., and drenched with dressing. Junk food goes down amazingly well. Pizza is a sometimes thing because of reflux, and I still dont understand why I can't do spaghetti. I can eat fish. I am well into living with maintenance of A, I was diagnosed in 1980 and then had my esophagus ruptured with the balloon treatment and had the corrective surgery in 1985. My espohagus is open all the time.I don't know all the fancy-dancy terms, but i am glad you all have new treatments available. I was really touchy for years when I had to order a pitcher or many glasses of water to wash my food down with at restaurants. Waitresses are not always nice about things like that. I don't even pay any attention any more, I just dont eat until the water is served. I still get rather upset with well-meaning people suggesting I take this or that herbal remedy for other things. So far, I have not been able to stomach much in the way of health pills, I get really bad reflux and can't sleep then. If not that, I burp up the taste, yuck. If I dont take a daily RX antacid such as protonix, all the symptoms come back, the pain, the spasms. I consider myself lucky to be able to eat at all. I am even 20 pounds overweight, which is probably a miracle. Got that way from a spell of being a cappuccino addict, hee hee. I have just learned to live with my handicap, and I figure I am luckier than a lot of handicapped people because it doesn't show and most people do not know. They do know if they eat with me, cause I eat funny I guess. Gulping enough water to wash somethign down produces a nice loud gulping sound and I sit there and wait patiently for the food to go down. That is when they go "Are you all right?" It has been years since anything got stuck and I had to rush to the john and stick my finger down my throat to try to dislodge whatever it is. It would be nice if this was a disease that I could control in some manner. It has been interesting to read the dissention. I figure any one of us who can eat at all is darn lucky. I have noticed through other forums that online communication often leads to misunderstandings and hurt feelings. Maybe because we cannot see the facial expressions. Good luck to you all, I just thought I would write a bit of my experiences. dawn

I am not at all surprised that weight problems would be a symptom of achalasia. The question is which is effecting the other. My guess is that achalasia trains the body to store fat. Lets say some achalasic likes to skip breakfast and eats a small lunch. Because of achalasia that lunch may sit in the esophagus for hours. That achalasic may be in the same state as someone that is fasting through the work portion of the day where most calories would normally be burned, but the body has been trained to be in fast mode and is trying to conserve calories and store as much as fat as possible. Guess where supper is going? Lets consider another achalasic. This one eats until fullness in the stomach causes it to send the enough signal to the brain. The achalasic eats but again food piles up in the esophagus. The achalasic continues to eat which slowly forces some food into the stomach, but at the same time food that made it into the stomach is slowly passing on through and out the stomach. By the time the stomach is satisfied, enough for more than one meal has been eaten, and a lot of it is still in the esophagus. Another achalasic. This one has good days and bad days. On bad days very little if any food makes it to the stomach, just as if fasting. From too many of these days the body is in long term fasting mode, ready to covert as much food as possible into fat. On good days this achalasic is like our second achalasic, in trying to feel satisfied too much is eaten and is readily converted to fat. What do think? Is being overweight making achalasia worse? I don't see any evidence for that conclusion, only " gossip " . Is achalasia causing people to put on weight and making it harder to lose it? I do see evidence for that conclusion. I also offer for your consideration that there are probably some achalasics that do not have enough weight. I see no reason that having achalasia would rule out having an eating or mental disorder in which the person is already inclined to eat too little. It may be that the best thing for these achalasics would be to encourage them to eat the very same foods others are encouraged not to eat. Of course when it is bad enough achalasia will cause a loss of weight. There are a lot of good reasons to not be overweight. I just don't see that achalasia is one of them, or any way that not being overweight is going to help with the symptoms of achalasia, unless that person has some other medical condition. If stressing about being overweight is making symptoms worse one could learn not to be stressed. (It isn't the weight it is the stress that is the problem). notan
Guest guest
Am now rethinking my last post about pain management docs. Hoping I didn't say the wrong thing about him. Guest guest
It seems to me that all you have done is explain the situation, and repeat what your PCP has said. I'm sure there's no problem with that. titch On 5/24/06, <mrstrem@...> wrote: Am now rethinking my last post about pain management docs. Hoping I didn't say the wrong thing about him. Guest guest
, Nothing wrong with your post abut the pain doc. You are allowed your opinion and your feelings, here and under the law. Never be afraid of stating your opinion or your feelings, or what you believe. I think you are right about the pain doc. Every pain doc should have far more at his disposal than injections. Unfortunately, there are bad docs and good docs. Sounds to be like you found a really bad one. Don't give up. Keep looking. There are good ones out there.
