Guest guest
Hi Ken - Dr. LaGrone's office will give you the names/numbers of hotels (I believe there's all of 2 in Amarillo) but I think most stay at The Amarillo Inn, which is right across the street from the hospital he uses, and close to his office. They should be sending you the paperwork to fill out in advance, and enclosed with it is Hotel information. ~~ > > Hi Cam / All, > > I sent my films today & " penciled in " an appt for Tuesday February 13th... for a surgical consult with Dr. La Grone... > > Prayers are appreciated as the Reality of this is hitting me and my wife and kids... we are focusing our limited conversations on the expected outcome and the good that will come of this.. but the reality of working out the details is something I could use some support... > > Dr. Akbarnia said (pretty much what you have all said) about planning for 3 months off from work, but to be prepared for it to take a month or two longer (if any complications)... > > For those who have " Been To Amarillo " - could you please give me some insight as to where to stay and some of those particulars?? > > Thanks and I will keep you posted... Guest guest
I talked to Bernie yesterday about writing the letter I need to apply for the sick-leave bank and she said she would say that I will need 3 - 6 months off work. I told her that I am not in any hurry to go back to work and that I do an awful lot of bending and twisting. She said I will have to adapt and she thinks I will go stir crazy if I stay home more than 6 months. I don't think I would, because I have a whole lot of projects I need to work on - website design and video editing projects -- these would take at least a year! I mentioned that the HR representative suggested social security disability and she said Dr Bridwell would not recommend that at this point. Of course, we will re-evaluate at the follow-up appointment, especially if he decides he needs to do the anterior portion of the surgery-- he will decide that at 3 - 4 months after the first two posterior procedures. If I can walk after surgery without too much pain, then I think the belly should be small enough by then. I also told Bernie that I have been losing weight at the rate of about 2 - 3 pounds per week, and she said that it would be quite all right for me to keep doing what I am doing. (counting calories and exercising) I had also been curious because the instructions said to quit taking vitamin C & E two weeks before surgery, but she told me to continue taking my multivitamins and calcium chews right up until the day before when I can only have clear liquids and jello. So far, I have lost 18 pounds since July (I didn't really get serious about weight loss until Christmas break), and I hope to lose another 10 - 12 before surgery (six weeks from yesterday). Thank you to whoever it was that posted the link to sparkpeople back in November! I am loving that website and it has really helped me to see that multivitamins and extra calcium are a necessity. > > Hi Cam / All, > > I sent my films today & " penciled in " an appt for Tuesday February 13th... for a surgical consult with Dr. Guest guest
Hi SB... Cam was the one that first found Sparkpeople.com and she does deserve a big Thanks! About what Bernie " thinks " , tho', I would say better to ask for too much and not need it, than too little and have to fight for more when you may be struggling. I would say " give me a year " or whatever the max is, and if you go back sooner WONDERFUL! Have a great day! - Marty " SB " <bahadreama@...> wrote: I talked to Bernie yesterday about writing the letter I need to apply for the sick-leave bank and she said she would say that I will need 3 - 6 months off work. ...she thinks I will go stir crazy if I stay home more than 6 months. Guest guest
apparently, six months was the max they would recommend at this point. Guest guest
Suzanne--I have been told that I need to stop taking Vitamin E, the Garlic Capsules and Ibuprofen I take 2 weeks before surgery also. They did not tell me exactly why, but from the reading I've done over the years--Vitamin E DOES need to be stopped before surgery because it causes our blood to thin, and thus, we can bleed easier and heavier during surgery. Guest guest
yes, the instructions I got said to quit taking ibuprofen, aspirin, vitamin C & E and NSAIDs one month to two weeks before surgery (there was a list for each time period) However, I think the precaution must have been for folks who are taking C & E as separate supplements rather than as part of a once daily mulitvitamin. It is the one per day multivitamin that Bernie said I could keep taking. I may switch to just iron two weeks before surgery to be on the safe side, because the possiblity of excessive bleeding was listed as the reason to stop these things. > > Suzanne--I have been told that I need to stop taking Vitamin E, the > Garlic Capsules and Ibuprofen I take 2 weeks before surgery also. > They did not tell me exactly why, but from the reading I've done over > the years--Vitamin E DOES need to be stopped before surgery because > it causes our blood to thin, and thus, we can bleed easier and > heavier during surgery. > > Carol > >
Guest guest
wow. sorry about all the posts that didn't add anything. I definitely did not click send even once, much less three times before typing. Sending email at work has really been weird lately. > > > > Suzanne--I have been told that I need to stop taking Vitamin E, the > > Garlic Capsules and Ibuprofen I take 2 weeks before surgery also. > > They did not tell me exactly why, but from the reading I've done > over > > the years--Vitamin E DOES need to be stopped before surgery because > > it causes our blood to thin, and thus, we can bleed easier and > > heavier during surgery. > > > > Carol > > > > >
Guest guest
Hi Ken and everyone: It's been several months since I've posted, but for those of you who don't know me, I'll be 3 years post op in April. I'm now in the process of making my travel arrangements and wanted to respond to Ken, as I just called the Best Western Amarillo Inn (806-358-7861) today to book a room. This hotel is right across the street from the hospital, and provide the shower chair, and toilet seat extension if you request it. Be sure to ask for the medical rate if you stay there. It's only a few miles from Dr. LaGrone's office. There are plenty of other hotels in Amarillo, but this one is closest to hospital and Dr. If you have any other questions, please feel free to email me privately at paulettep11@..., and I'll be glad to try to help. I'm doing really well, still standing upright, which I so enjoy! I find the colder weather is more challenging from a leg muscular standpoint (tight muscles), so I have recently started my home PT routine again (I goofed off from that a few months, and really notice a difference). I'm working part time, and also involved with CERT (community emergency response team), taking continuing classes. I will give a 3 year update in April! I hope to post more in the meantime. My thoughts and good wishes go to everyone. etteKen Leonard <kclnt777@...> wrote: Hi Cam / All, I sent my films today & "penciled in" an appt for Tuesday February 13th... for a surgical consult with Dr. La Grone...
