Is there anyone that experienced not being to lie down after coming home? I just cannot do it without 15/10 pain in the L hip. Two nights in a row I have slept sitting up in a straight chair. I have put a call in to Dr. Hey and is afraid they will put me back in the hospital. The only reason I could lie in bed there was because they would knock me out.

Yes Peggy, I had a hard time finding a position that would work for

me. This was only the first few nights home. It did get better for me

rather quickly. It was my hip area too. Sitting up brought other

challenges. My sister sent me one of those body pillows filled with a

sandlike substance. If I wedged that under me just right, all was

good. Perhaps have try to position a soft pillow? Try to rest and

hang in there. Ann

Hopefully it will go away then. I only have the sharp shooting pain when I try to lie down on my sides or back. As long as I keep my meds regular and don't attempt to lay down I do pretty well. I just get tired of sitting in the same place.

Hi Peggy,

I didn't have the pain you are having, but when I laid down I was

surrounded by pillows! I used a body pillow on the front, and Jim put

one to support the back. I also used one between my legs...and I

always took a pain pill before I went to bed for at least the first six

weeks. I could not sit in a straight chair for more than 20-30 minutes

at a time with out just needing to lie down.

Don't give up. You'll find out what works for you.

Sending you healing thoughts,

Dianne T.

Yeah...Kay. I forgot that I used ice packs, but now remember that they

helped me alot. We really need to document all this stuff..one of

these days. Peggy, Has the pain eased up any? any good sleep? I sure

hope so. Thinking about you...Ann

I slept longer last night but still had to sleep sitting up. I couldn't tolerate the recliner. I even had my hubby put some foam on it to make it a little firmer and I couldn't do it.

I read these posts via email and this time hit "reply all" instead of "reply" so I don't know if it will get double posted, or where all it might go!

Though all of you wonderful people don't know me well, or hardly at all (I'm a nice person!), the idea of "documenting all of this stuff..one of these days" sounds like a wonderful idea. Though there is so much information contained in this forum, I can see how getting the information, as well as each individual's story, the path of each's journey that led them here, etc.

I realize that there are a lot of talented people here who are computer and software savvy so I wouldn't want to undermine anybody's intent to "publish" a book, or booklet, cd, or any type of content relating to the members here.

I have been doing desktop publishing since 1990 in a PC based platform. I use software such as Adobe Photoshop, PageMaker, InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat, MicrosoftOffice (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher) and a bunch of other software involved in publishing, whether for print or electronic.

I would be honored to participate in the compilation - or even become the publisher of the collective stories and experiences for everyone in this forum. I know that it would be a while before I could start this - since my own surgery is May 15th, but I honestly feel that the combined experiences and knowledge gained from each individual would be an invaluable thing to have, if only for each individual to have, not to mention to be able to share this with someone who has just entered into this little known world that has pretty much been life as we have known it since our own situations have crept up on us.

I remember in 1999 or 2000, when my lower back issues started, I was totally clueless as to what was going on, had assumed that my scoliosis had been cured in 1972 when I had the HR fusion and 8 months of life in that 20 lb. plaster body cast.

I remember the first time I stumbled on post scoliosis surgery, the term flatback, and mainly when I found a group of people on the internet who stuck together supporting each other - sharing information, compassion...it was such of a good feeling, until I visited the Ortho Dr. who had pretty much taken over the two retired scoliosis Drs. in this area. His intent seemed to disclaim any connection of what I was experiencing with scoliosis, and especially the surgery I had in 1972. I didn't seek him out to place any blame but I was hoping he could help me. He basically gave me a pep talk, said I didn't have flatback, that Dr. Hineg (the Dr. of the 70's in Charlotte doing this cutting edge HR fusion surgery) was ahead of his time in that he didn't do fusions past L1 or L2 so it was impossible for me to have flatback. He told me to start a regimen of touching my toes several times a day, that it would "fire those muscles up" and that was all I needed to do. He also told me to bend and twist, like you see kids at the park doing when they're playing - that the back was designed to be used......

Sorry, I'm getting long winded again......but when I detailed my story several days ago, I left out this Dr. - mainly because I had flooded the internet already with such of a long post...

Back to my point....after my visit with this Dr. I believed what he said, gained ability to do repetitions of touching my toes. The only benefit I gained was just that - I could touch my toes. Didn't help my pain, didn't stop the progression of the distortion, etc. I went through about two more years of pain, and decided on my own to see a neurosurgeon. The rest of the story is in that other looonnng post!

I feel like his ego and stance that the other (now retired) Dr. did no wrong and it was his mission to prove that instead of taking a real look at me and trying to help as a Physician - does that make sense?

He was on a local "HealthWise" TV program through PBS a few weeks ago, still preaching that same story. I wanted to call in and tell him a thing or two.

So, back to my reason for this post - my intent would only to be to put your words, photos, whatever on media - not to write your story or change it - just a medium. It could remain as an ongoing publication or one publication that gets "revised" periodically!

So, the offer, free of any charge, of assembling documentation is there. I would be honored to do it, or help in any way if someone else is already doing it, and would welcome someone to "be in charge" and I'll be the one to put it together.

Sincerely,

Gross
