Hi all,

did anybody find themselves in some serious pain after surgery?

One month out, sometimes I want to scream I hurt so bad. Then just

as quickly as it comes, it is gone. I can almost count out the 20

seconds or so before it passes. It feels like a nerve running up and

down the spine.

,

Never had such an experience. Are you doing anything when this happens

or are you laying still?

I would call it in to DrGlazer if I was you and it happens more than a

few times. Just my opinion.

Sorry you are hurting,

I know it is not the same but I had this when I had a lump removed

from my breast. All of a sudden, a few months later, it felt like

electric schocks and a pulsing pain and then it would stop. The DR

said that nerve endings recontect and test themselves when you heal

from surgery and sometimes that thurts. He said it would go away and

it did. It was a few weeks. I could tell because I did not do anything

to hurt the area it would just hurt for a few seconds and than stop.

I don't know how much this helps.

Cam,

It appears to be just when i am lying still and according to the dr

office, it happens. It is just raw nerves and will stop as more

healing happens. PT should help. I also have a similar problem with

a muscle spasm in the lumbar area, they claim PT should help with

that also.

I went through a stage that lasted several weeks where as I was relaxing to go to sleep, I'd get a really nasty judder of my whole body, like an electric shock had been pumped through it. It never happened at any other time, and it was just nerves settling, but I was very glad when it ended. Hope your pain and spasms stop soon :o)

Yea - I'm 7 months post op and still in constant soreness pain - so I'm

still on a Fentanyl patch and percocet. Yesterday I did feel a weird 1-2

second muscle pain after I did like a golfer's pitch to get something out of

the dishwasher, but I think that's the nerves starting to " feel their oats "

again.

I would get this shooting pain and grab my boob. That makes for

some interesting stares in public. It hurt and it was so unexpected.

It would always take me by surprise. Then the next minute like

nothing was ever wrong.

Sounds very much like the nerve twinges I get when nerves are recovering, and always describe (when required to by the startled stares) as " a nerve bit me " . My husband only had a vague sort of idea what this meant, but recently had a repeat surgery for a ganglion on his wrist which had returned, and a couple of weeks ago he jumped practically out of his skin, I asked what the heck was wrong and he just looked at me with this surprised sort of grin and said a nerve just bit me ;o)

When I get one alongside my scar on my back, usually they're near the anterior scar from my first surgery, they can be persistent little devils and the only thing that seems to help then is pressure. It wouldn't be the first time that I've had one out of my reach and had 2c pressing like mad on my back until it passed!

The whole body jerks while settling though, they were really just weird - I half wondered a couple of times if I was going to judder myself right off a hook or something, but it was only ever just uncomfortable really.

Geez Lorrie,

We are suppose to feel better aren't we? I sometimes think I am in

more pain now then before but to be fair, I need to wait a lot longer

to make that assessment. what was done for your revision?

My DR (with my breast lump) said it is actually a good thing that

your body is making new connections and healing its self. If that

brings any comfort. It did for me because I felt like every pain

meant that I was just a little closer to being better. Kind of like

how contractions during labor mean you are a little closer to having

the baby.

I wonder if I will be thinking that when I am going through what you

are going through right now. Probably not. I'll probably be thinking

a few choice words while it is happening.

Dear , I had a bad time like you decribe after my second surgery, last year - shooting pains through knees, legs, and generally all over. I also had the continuance of sciatica pain. The doctor told me that the sciatic nerve was badly impinged when he corrected it during the surgery, and that it might take some time to subside. After about six months, it did.

I attributed all of this to an exacerbation of my arthritis. My rheumatologist agreed. I hate to say it but I think many of the orthopedic surgeons don't get into pain control to any great extent.

I plan to have someone in mind to see for pain management, if need be, after my surgery. I just don't know yet how responsive my orthopedic surgeon will be to this problem, should it occur.

I sometimes got some relief at night by applying one of those patches to the pain site - Bengay makes them, also Thermacare. Also there's a topical spray called Stopain which helps - at least enough so you and the rest of the family can get back to sleep!!

Jolynn,

Maybe or maybe not, it comes and goes. I should be thinking that

every little pain is a closer to being better and healed. Thanks, I

think I will adopt that line of thinking.

HI Jane,

Thanks for the info. I may try the Stopain. Right now I heat up

a bean bag and put it near the site since the incesion runs through

it I can't put anything directly on the spasm site.

, you might like to know that the active ingredient in Stopain is

menthol. Same idea as BenGay, it's a counter-irritant that distracts your

mind from the pain. The good thing about this stuff is you can spray it

onto body parts you can't reach with an ointment.

Hi Sharon,

I still won't be able to use it I think. While the nerve spasm runs

down the spine from top to bottom. The lumbar spasm runs sideways

across the lumbar area. The incesion is close to being healed but

not quite all the way.

Hi - my pain now is definitely different than the pain before

revision surgery. That pain, thank goodness is gone. I can stand up

straight now and I feel stronger maybe not everyday but I've seen a

difference in the past 2 months.

I basically had 3 surgeries in one! Anterior thoracolumbar discectomy and

fusion T11 to L5, anterior spinal fuson with local bone and femoral head

cancellous allograft, T11 to L5, Harms Titanium cage fixation L4-5 with

local bone and grafton putty. Then posterior spinal fusin, removal of

Harrington Rod, Thoracolumbar Osteotomy T10-T11,T11-T12, T12-L1, L1-L2,

Posterior spinal fusion T7 to S1 with left Galveston screw fixation,

segmental instrumentation T6 to S1 with Left Iliac Galveston Fixation, Isola

System, Local bone and femoral Head cancellous allograft. Also a redone

thorocoplasty and the 9th rib removed from the front so they could do the

anterior surgery.

By the way everyone - my husband, Bill has a terrible pinched nerve in his

neck that he has been babying for the past year. He had 2 cortizone shots

early this year, but he is having terrible pain down his left arm and

numbness in his finger. We met with the neurologist for the 3rd time this

past Wednesday and Bill has decided to go ahead and have a " Foraminotomy " .

This is an operation to enlarge the space where a spinal nerve root exits

the cervical spinal canal to relieve the symptoms of a " pinched nerve. " He

removes bone on top of the nerve in order to give it more room to expand. I

grilled the surgeon and he feels this will alleviate Bill's pain. Being

that Bill doesn't have neck pain and the pain is appearing in his arm and

fingers, the surgeon feels he can do this procedure and avoid a fusion in

the neck. Bill definitely didn't want to have a fusion. The surgeon has

performed this many, many times.

The surgeon had a cancellation for this coming Wednesday and Bill is taking

the spot. The procedure is about 1 hour. A far cry different from my

surgery this past November and 10.5 hours. He was there for me so I will be

there for him. Keep him in your prayers. I'll keep you updated on his

progress. I'm glad this surgery is local this time. My mom is down in

land helping me with our daughter. She has been a saint!
