Carol, that's something I've been thinking of getting as well, although I do have a rechargeable motorized sweeper that does floors as well as carpets, and even if I have to use the broom I can use the sweeper to pick up the dirt after. The dust pan would be great for sand in the driveway, etc., though. I did a little looking online, and there are quite a few choices on Amazon. Here's the link:

This is kind of a strange question, but I figure someone here would have an idea of how to go about getting one. I figured that I need a long handled (as long as a short broom) dust pan. I've seen people using them as they're out sweeping like at an amusement park or something a janitor might use. They are covered, too. Does anyone have an idea of where I could find one? I figure I could help occasionally with sweeping if I had one of these. Right now not possible with a short dust pan. Thanks in advance!Carol V.

Dear Carol,

I have a really cheap one, not as fancy as you say but it does the trick, and the price was right, I got it at the dollar store. If you have " Dollar Tree" stores where you are, try them , it's where I got mine and I've been using it for three years now, what a bargain.

Carol,

I noticed you got some good suggestions to find the dust pan. If all else fails, check with a janitorial supply store. They usually only sell to businesses, but they might make an exception for the "disabled", or if you know someone in a business who can get you one.

Carol,

I went out an bought one too and am glad I did. I actually couldn't

find one in the usual spot in the grocery store or hardward store. Then

I noticed one on sale in the local office supply store! Go figure...its

not okay to bend down in an office or business setting....but it is at

home? What are these marketers thinking. It's not like we are the only

with limited mobility. Almost any senior that is unsteady at all would

prefer this model!

Anyway, they are inexpensive and you will use it for the rest of your

life...so invest in one...you won't regret it.

Take Care, Cam

As long as we're on the topic of back-friendly cleaning tools, I should mention that Dr. Rand ok'ed my use of the cordless sweeper very early in my healing. It weighs less than 5 lbs. I described it to him, and he said it sounded fine "if it has a long handle", to which I replied, "oh, yes, of course!" With a parrot and 2 chinchillas, waiting for the cleaning lady (who just worked for us until Christmas) was not an option, and I've been using the sweeper daily right along.

Mine is a Bissel Perfect Sweep Turbo, (which I got after going through 2 EuroPro Shark models and this one has lasted longer), and my only complaint with these things is that they get dust and hair pulled into them, stop working properly, and the only way to clean them out is to remove all the little screws, open up, clean out, and put them back together. I can do it, barely, but a lot of folks probably throw them out and get another, which is probably why they make them like that! I've had my Bissel apart 3 times, and swore at it every time. I've had it a couple years, though. Oh, and this last time the motor needed a drop of WD-40.

But for the newly revised, especially those who don't have great home support, cordless sweepers can be a godsend.

Hi Carol :)

I've been sweeping since about 7 weeks post-op. I found a long-

handled dustpan at Home Depot. They only had 2 to choose from, and

the one I chose came with a broom that attaches to it while they're

stored. It's very helpful, as I was having to try to use my reacher &

a wet paper towel to pick up the sweepings beforehand. And as you can

imagine, that doesn't work too well :)

I looked at Target, and they didn't carry any. I don't know if

Walmart or maybe a larger Target (a Super Target or Target Greatland)

may have them. I think you'd probably have the best luck at a home

improvement type of store though, because they tend to carry

janitorial supplies.

Thank you to everyone with all of your suggestions on the dustpan. I

tried Super Target today, and no luck there. Next I will try Home

Depot or Lowe's. After that, Office Depot or Staples. If no luck at

those, online here I come!!!
