Guest guest
OxyContin cannot be split because you would get the full dose at once if you take a pill cut in half. We tried to do that and the pharmacist said NO. I think 10 mg is the smallest dose but I'm sure you could transfer to Oxycodone at 5 mg and take as needed. Peggy [ ] Re: 5 months post op Awwww man, you guys are scaring me ( ha ha...I think) I think I have posted this some before. I am a little more than 3 months post op and started at 40 mg of Oxycontin twice a day (in the hospital and for a few weeks afterwards) and then down to 20mg twice a day and now I am at 10mg 3 times a day. When I first began taking the 10 mg I forgot to take it that third time in the middle of the day (I was so used to taking it just twice a day) and the second day of taking it at crazy times and not "on time" I was crying for no reason, restless BODY syndrome, very nervous, sweating like crazy but chill bumps and freezing, and just icky! NOW I have been on the 10mg three times a day for about a month and if I am late taking it (like 45 min to an hour) I start feeling shaky again. I am REALLY concerned about stopping it. As you all can see I have been stepping down gradually, but it's still affecting me. After 15 years of back problems, I have NEVER had a medication do this to me. I started Physical therapy today, and so I am not ready to get completely off of pain meds yet, but I am afraid the longer I am on this the more dependent I am becoming (is that true? is that what is happening?) I am not taking it in any way except strictly by the doctors orders...no more and no less. Is it inevitable that I am going through those horrible withdrawal symptoms when I get completely off of this? Is detox a normal thing? I know you all aren't my doctor..... just wondering what experiences you have and know from what you have gone through. I have read what everyone has written so far in the last couple of days and that is helping to know it's not just me.I thought Oxycontin was just like Percocet (minus the acetemenphene and it's extended release instead of immediate release..??)) I have been on Percocet 10/325 for years and never experienced this when I took it at odd times and now not at all. I have only taken this med for 3 1/2 months! Guest guest
Wait a second. If you took half a 10 mg OxyContin, it would release 5 mg oxycodone immediately. If you take 5 mg oxycodone you get 5 mg oxycodone immediately. Difference? Guest guest
The pharmacist told me you would get the full dose of the half pill immediately. It wouldn't be spread out over time. The 5 mg oxycodone is supposed to last for 6-8 hours so I would think it is designed not to release all at once. I just know they said it was too dangerous to take a half pill of the OxyContin - it will make you high, etc. Peggy [ ] Re: 5 months post op Awwww man, you guys are scaring me ( ha ha...I think) I think I have posted this some before. Guest guest
Yeah, I was told that 10mg is the smallest you can go and that I would taper from 10mg 3 times a day to 2 times a day and then once a day over time. I know for sure that you can NOT split or break or crush Extended release Oxycontin because too much of the medication will go straight to your bloodstream and THAT is what the drug addicts are doing to get high and abuse them. I am going to talk to my doctor and see if there is anything I can take when I am ready to drop from 3 times a day to 2 times a day. I am thinking I may be able to take it closer together. Right now - 3 times a day is every 8 hours (I am finding that I have to be strict with that schedule). When I drop to two times a day....I am going to ask my doctor if maybe I can stretch the two doses over 9-10 hours instead of every 12 hours and gradually work my way so that it is every 12 hours. I don't know maybe that will work. Like I said, I just started outpatient PT on Friday, so I think I need to stay on the pain meds for a little while longer while I am pushing my body more. Thanks for all the info everybody! It amazes me that how sensitive a person can be to one medicane and not another and it's different than the way another person reacts to it. Guess that's why God made everybody different huh? Debbie (Tampa) > > > > > > Hi All, > > > 5 months today, how time flies. Guest guest
The difference I think is that when you take half of a 10 mg of oxycontin it can release the whole 10 mg Sharon Green <sharon.green18@...> wrote: Wait a second. Guest guest
I'm really confused here. When I switched from OxyContin (ER) to the generic form....it was Oxycodone (ER). So I would treat both meds the same. I am 3 1/2 years post op, and although I no longer take Oxycodone, I still, on occasion, have to take a very low dose of lortab. Keep in mind that I went hiking in the mountains for about 4 hours last week! So I am very happy with my outcome. I do think we need to be mindful of the meds thing, but most importantly (in my opinion), it more important to be up and about and walking, hiking, etc., rather than lying down in pain. ette (NM)Sharon Green <sharon.green18@...> wrote: Wait a second. Guest guest
I have noticed that if I wake up feeling stiff and sore, I feel much better after I go for a walk! I think there is a very good reason that my doctor said I should be walking one mile per day one month after surgery and add another mile every month. > Keep in mind that I went hiking in the mountains for about 4 hours last week!
