Guest guest
I just read your post after being off the line for a few weeks. Although there are different laws in different states I'm sure there are accommodations for your son's education. In New York, it's called an IEP or Individualized Education Program. New Jersey has it too but uses a different name. He could be classified as Other Health Impaired and given all kinds of accommodations including testing modifications on standardized examinations. (ie. Extra time allowed, to be given at a separate location, answers recorded in any manner, read to him etc.) Although some " old fashioned " teachers have difficulty with this modification program, once it's formulated IT IS THE LAW. There is something else called a 504 plan in New York which provides accommodations and testing modifications to children who need help but do not need to be classified.. Each state has it's own program and plan with it's own name. You will have to check that out. You might call your school district and ask to speak to the head of Special Education Services. He/ she will know a lot more than your guidance counselor about Special Ed services as a rule. I am a Speech/Language Pathologist who works in Special Education and has for almost 20 years. In NY there are many benefits to classifying your child. Ask questions !!!!!!!!! If there is anything I can help you with, please feel free to Email me. Good luck.
