I have been drinking beet juice to get rid of Mercury toxicity. I readthat beet juice chelates with Mercury and many other toxic metals andremoves it through the urine. It purifies the blood.

While it is correct that beet juice is good for the liver and helps to purify the blood, I am not so sure that the statement about beets helping to chelate mercury is correct.

I have seen no evidenct to support this statement.

Do you have a source of information for this?

One of the other natural chelators that I have found to be associated with removing heavy metals from the body is cilantro.

See below.

Source: AlternativesDate: June 1998, pages 91 - 92Publisher: Mountain Home PublishingISSN: 0893-5025Author: G. , DCTitle: The Poor Man's Chelation TherapyThere's nothing I like more than learning about inexpensive, commonherbs or spices that exhibit unusual healing properties. Historically, the use of herbs and spices in cooking evolved as a method to preservefoods and make them safer to store and eat. While we've grown accustomedto using these items to enhanced or accentuate flavors of food, researchers continue to discover that they have much more to offer thanjust good taste. A recent example involves the work of Dr. YoshiakiOmura. Dr. Omura recently informed us that he discovered almost byaccident, that the leaves of the coriander plant can accelerate theexcretion of mercury, lead and aluminum from the body. He had beentreating several patients for an eye infection called trachoma (granularconjunctivitis), which is caused by the micro-organism Chlamydiatrachomatis. Following the standard treatment with antibiotics. Dr.Omura found that the patients' symptoms would clear up initially, thenrecur within a few month. He experienced similar difficulties intreating viral related problems like Herpes Simplex types I & II andCytomegalovirus infection.Cilantro Helps Flush Out Heavy MetalsAfter taking a closer look, Dr. Omura found those organisms seemed tohide and flourish in area of the body where there were concentrations ofheavy metals like mercury, lead and aluminum. Somehow the organicismwere able to use the toxic metals to protect themselves from theantibiotics. It just so happens that while he was testing for thosemetals, Dr. Omura noticed the mercury level in the urine increased afterone consumed a healthy serving of Vietnamese soup. The soup containsChinese parsley, or it is better known in this country, cilantro. (Someof you may also know it as coriander, since it comes form the leaves ofthe coriander plant.) Further testing revealed that eating cilantroalso increased urinary excretion of lead and aluminum. And when cilantrowas used concurrently with antibiotics or natural anti-viral agents and/or fatty acids like EPA with D.A., the above infection could beeliminated for good. (Acupnct Electrother Res. 95:20 (3-4): 195-229.)Dr. Omura has made a remarkable discovery. He's found a novel techniquewhich greatly increases our ability to clear up recurring infectionsboth viral and bacterial. And perhaps more exciting, he's discovered aninexpensive, easy way to remove (or "chelate") toxic metals from thenervous system and body tissue - one that anybody can use. This isGreat News for Amalgam Sufferers Chelation therapy using chemicals likeEDTA has long been used to help remove these heavy metals, but cilantrois the only natural substance I'M aware of that has demonstrated thisability. This will become news for people suffering from the ill effectof amalgam dental fillings, which contains approximately 50% mercury.Dr. Omura recently performed another study in which three amalgamfilling where removed from an individual using all of the precautionsavailable to prevent absorption of the mercury from the amalgam. Evenwith strong air and water suction, water rinses, and a rubber dentaldam, significant amounts of mercury were later found in the individual'slungs, kidneys,, endocrine organs, liver and heart. There was no mercuryin these tissue prior to the amalgam removal. Remarkably, without thehelp of any chelation agents, cilantro was able to remove the mercury intwo to three weeks. (Acupuncture Electrotherapeutic Research 96;21 (2):133-60.) Since some of the patients didn't like the taste of freshcilantro, Dr. Omura had a pharmaceutical company create a 100 mgcilantro tablet. Inthe above dental study, one tablet was taken four times a day. As ofyet, I haven't been able to find a tested commercial tablet of cilantro. It is believed that the active component in cilantro are easilydestroyed during processing. For this reason, I recommend sticking tofresh herb. It can be eaten raw in soup or salad, on tacos, or asgarnish with practically any dish. Recipe for Cilantro Pesto (Make That"Chelation Pesto") I would think it should also work if the cilantrowere juiced, but perhaps the easiest and tastiest way to use the herbwould be as the main ingredient in a home made pesto sauce. You canstart with the basic recipe below and add other nuts and spices to suiteyour taste.Cilantro Pesto1 clove of garlic1/2 cupof almonds, cashews, or other nuts 1 cup packed fresh cilantroleaves2 tablespoons lemon juice6 tablespoons olive oilPut the cilantro and olive oil in blender and process until the cilantrois chopped. Add the rest of the ingredients and process to a lumpy past.(You may need to add a touch of hot water and scrape the sides of theblender.) You can change the consistency by altering the amount of oliveoil and lemon juice, but keep the 3:1 ratio of oil to juice. (If freezeswell, so you can make several batches at once.)In light ofthe ever-worsening quality of our water and soil and the widespread useof metals in everyday items like deodorant and cans, I would seriouslysuspect that all of us have some toxic metals in our body. And unlessthey are carried out by a chelating agent, things like lead, aluminumand mercury remain in the body forever. Besides associated witharthritic condition, depression, muscle pain and weakness, memory lossand deterioration, and maybe even Alzheimer's disease.Summer'shere and cilantro is readily available across the country. It is verypopular herb in Mexican cooking, and due to their large Mexicanpopulations is easy to find anywhere from Texas to California. In otherareas, you may need to visit an Oriental market or specialtysupermarket, (Remember, it's also called Chinese parsley.)I wouldhighly recommend that you take advantage of this "poor man's chelationtreatment". I'm in the process of doing it now my shelf and intend to doso at least once or twice a year from now on. All it takes is addingfresh cilantro to your everyday foods or eating a couple teaspoons ofcilantro pesto a day for two or three weeks; either will give the doseDr. Omura used in his research. Judging by the price around here, thatmeans you'd be spending less than a dollar for two weeks of cleansing!Of course, if you really don't like cilantro, you can always spend athousands times that much on a series of intravenous chelationtreatments...+++++++++++++ http://www.listserv.gmd.de/archives/amalgam.html++++++++++++++

So if you have mercury fillings it is still a good idea to juice cilantro?

>>So if you have mercury fillings it is still a good idea to juice cilantro?

laura

,

On the Amalgam Listserve group, this question was asked, and Dr. Cutler's

answer follows:

(Q.)>>Reasoning that this is a natural product and having read on a

website advice about eating cilantro if someone did not want to remove

his/her amalgams, I started eating a handful of cilantro three days ago. I

am concerned whether this could in any way be harmful. >>

(A):This is extremely harmful. The stuff does have some chelating effect on

the

brain and thus has the same dangers of increasing brain mercury as any other

chelating agent that we refer to by chemical name.

Remember, botulism and strichnine are natual products, and mercury is a

naturally occurring element. Natural does not mean it is automatically

good.

Andy Cutler

He states again on the autism treatment newsgroup:

Patient reports do indicate it moves mercury around. This means that if you

use it properly it can detox you, and if you use it improperly you can

really mess yourself up. Unfortunately, there is no pharmacokinetic

information on the active ingredient in cilantro (nobody even knows what it

is) so you get to guess what dose and administration schedule is both safe

and effective. There is tons of pharmacokinetic information on alpha lipoic

acid, so my suggestion is to try LA, and if you just can't use that then

to

try cilantro very carefully. I am NOT saying that cilantro is ineffective.

I believe cilantro is effective. I am saying that it is unwise to take

unnecessary risks by using cilantro instead of lipoic acid if you can indeed

use LA.

Mercury vapor (as emitted from amalgams, broken thermometers, broken

fluorescent lights) passes the Blood Brain Barrier easily. Organic mercury

(like thimerosal in vaccines) passes the blood-brain barrier easily.

It is only inorganic mercury that is stopped by the BBB. So the BBB keeps

all the mercury IN the brain once the organic or vaporous mercury that gets

there is converted to the more stable inorganic form.

The important thing to remember with mercury fillings is that they will

constantly emit mercury vapors every time you chew. This releases the gas

into your bloodstream, in the organic form.

In order to STOP the flow of mercury vapors in the first place, you really

need to get the fillings out once and for all and replace them with

something safer. Then do chelation therapy, with the proper protocol to get

the mercury out of your body in the appropriate order. (Bloodstream first

with DMSA, then brain mercury with lipoic acid + DMSA)

More things to consider, from Dr. Cutler:

--the rate at which people excrete mercury varies wildly (as shown in all

publications where this was studied) so that some people build it up and

keep

it while others get rid of it rapidly.

--Mercury's half life in blood is very well established in the literature to

average 77 days in mercury plant workers, with a range of 33-240 days in

people who chose to have their fillings removed for whatever reason.

Half life in brain is estimated from autopsy data to be no less than 16-25

years and possibly infinite.

It takes approximately 65-100 years for a human's brain mercury to fall by

80%. If a human takes DMSA(a mercury chelating agent) during this time it

can be shortened to only 50-80 years.

If you believe numbers and equations apply to how drugs act in humans (as in

the pharmacokinetics chapter in many medical books) you could also calculate

that if you dosed more appropriately - 100 mg every 4 hours for an adult -

then brain mercury could be reduced by 80% in only 20 years.

That's a great question. I don't know the answer, however, I

would imagine the process whereby the mercury is chelated from

the cells in the body may not be applicable to the tooth cells.

I do know that the mercury vapor is the primary way the body

uptakes the mercury from the fillings.

Hopefully someone else on the list can answer your question with

facts rather than speculation.

Thanks,

Dave Perkins
