All the women have gone on a High fat, low carb diet. They just eat tons of meat....I know this because my daughter is on it with them. I told her I was shocked that any MD would not tell them the danger involved, so she asked the one she works for and he told her he thought it could be very harmful if one stayed on it for very long. He indicated the over load on the kidneys was very great. Edith

Personally, I agree with you that it SHOULD cause other problems, but the simple fact is, Dr Atkins has been doing this for over 20 years, and has seen NONE of the bad stuff warned about, and seen near miraculous CURES of things like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes/blood sugar problems, etc etc. So I ask you...where are all these people who have developed kidney problems, etc? If this were true, don't you think we'd be hearing about all the LAWSUITS against the purveyors of this diet? -- Marcus

" Excess protein puts stress on the liver and kidneys which have to work hard to rid the body of the byproducts of protein digestion, such as urea. To excrete urea, the kidneys bind it with calcium drawn from the blood. As calcium levels in the blood drop, they are replaced by calcium that is leeched from the bones. There is mounting evidence that this calcium leeching explains the increasing incidence of osteoporosis in Western countries, where consumption of animal proteins has increased dramatically over the course of the century.
