Guest guest
Hi... I just talked to (and little to and Bob). has an ileus and is just miserable. I told them to ask for a consult from gastroenterology, but from what I've heard and read, there's not much that can be done beyond just sitting it out. I've warned about this before. If you're having spine surgery that involves an anterior approach, DO NOT eat or drink ANYTHING until bowel sounds are heard. The literature shows that the sooner a patient starts eating, the fewer complications such as infection occur, so I think the surgeons are encouraging patients to eat. They know that once the ileus is resolved, patients are really happy, so they probably care about this issue a lot less than the patients do.
