I always figured that unless my bowel movements were difficult I was not constipated. It never occurred to me that constipation would also apply to frequency. I'm not sure how often they were in the past, but I'm guessing 2x per week. It seems unless I take some sort of supplemental fiber that's all I get. What do you guys think?<< When we obtain energy from the food we eat, we create a waste product (feces) that should be eliminated within 24 hours or less. But with a meat-based, high-fat, low-fiber diet, the average American has a transit time of 72 to 96 hours, meaning this waste begins a toxic build-up that creates numerous problems for the colon and every other part of the body. If it is not quickly eliminated, fecal matter in the colon turns into a toxic and putrid waste that is absorbed into the rest of our system. Over the course of time, this effects the functioning of every cell and organ in our body. It poisons the blood, lymphatic system, nervous system and brain, while clogging up the heart, vascular system, lungs and sinuses. A proper diet is one that provides necessary nourishment for the body, and facilitates proper waste removal and cleansing... from the cellular level to the colon. But the typical American diet featuring an abundance of meat, dairy, fried and over-cooked foods, sugar, starches, salt and artificial chemicals is hard to digest, very little of it can be assimilated as nutrition into our cells, it is high in toxic waste, fat and cholesterol, and slow to move though the colon because it is low in fiber. Guest guest
You should be taking something with both soluble and insoluble fiber in it. Psyllium is the best for that. Soluble fiber binds with bile and is excreted. Bile is produced in the liver so with all this bile being excreted, the liver has to produce more. The liver needs CHOLESTEROL to make bile, so your body is actually killing two birds with one stone...it is lowering your cholesterol! Soluble fiber is also very absorbent. It absorbs toxins in the body and moves them down to the colon to be expelled. Insoluble fiber adds bulk. It is also a gentle scrub for the inside of the colon, cleansing as it goes down. It helps get everything out of the body more quickly. Psyllium is a great herb/fiber. It lubricates, heals the intestinal tract and strengthens and restores tone. It also has an amazing ability to remove mucoid matter form the colon. The one I take has many herbs added to the psyllium as well that support the urinary tract, the liver, and the skin. It is easy enough to find psyllium at a health food store Hope this helps. I consider someone to be constipated if they are not having bowel movements daily. All that food should be coming out at least once a day, if you are putting it in 3 times a day! Guest guest
You should be getting about 30 -35 grams of fiber a day. Guest guest
If you are still having problems with bowel movements, drink a cup of Senna/dieters tea in the evening. Do it on a weekend the first couple of days though because you might just explode. It is a laxative. You don't want to be at work until your body has had a couple of days to adjust to it. The tea you can also get at the health food store. Guest guest
Sounds like I'm not getting enough fiber then! Anybody know what a good daily figure is for fiber consumption? Guest guest
Thanks for the great info! I have already been taking psyllium so it sounds like I'm on the right track. Guest guest
I totally agree that one should have at least a daily BM. If you get on Kombucha tea, watch out! For those of you with constipation it will really get you going. I too have had lifetime trouble with it, but not after starting KT, the funny thing is that it has stopped the opposite trouble too. I was first introduced to it by a woman who was so sick with vommiting and "the runs" that she was losing body fluids so fast that she could not get them replaced by an IV, the medical people pronounced her as dying. Her daughter brought her in some Kombucha tea from a friend and she was almost instantly cured. It sold me, and I have been drinking it ever since. My advice to those interested is to get on that wonderful list at egroups called: Kombucha. Cheers! Kris
