Carla...

Here's a picture of a really big one:

http://www.edu.rcsed.ac.uk/photoalbum/ph117.htm

Mine is sort of sausage shaped, on the left side of my abdomen, above

and to the right of my anterior incision.

Hi Carla – No it isn’t an

incisional hernia. My scar is very flat – but I still have a

protrusion where Dr. Boachie took out a rib and he also said they had to spread

my ribs open to do the anterior surgery. He said it is still a little

swollen (right now – today in fact – I’m 5 months (140 days)

post op – so I think it will go down even more. It is an area about

the size of my hand. I’ll keep you up to date as to how much it is

going to go down.

Dear Lorrie,

The " bulge " you

are talking about - is it an incisional hernia? I couldn't tell exactly

from your post, but thought maybe that's what you meant. If so, do you

know if there is a place where I can see what they look like & how to get

rid of them? Or perhaps a person/people in here who would send me a

picture of theirs, along with the plastic surgeons they used? Thanks.

Lorrie...

If it's an uneven protrusion, it COULD be an incisional hernia. Mine

doesn't look like those in the pictures either.

Hi Andy – that is exactly right –

my scar wraps around from my groin to my waist. I’m sure it will

disappear fine. My belly button isn’t lopsided either. I think Dr.

Boachie did a fine job – my husband looked at my back scar and the

anterior scar before I did and he said Dr. B did a beautiful job.

Lorrie's follow-up with Dr Boachie, 3/17/2006

Hi Carla and Lorrie,

Dr. Boachie performed my revision surgery in 1/03. I

have a scar from my groin to my waist - it curves around, on a diagonal. My

'bump' has significantly gone down though it hasn't disappeared. I would say

that no one else would notice it if they saw me without clothes. I myself

am aware, however, that my belly button is slightly lopsided due to the

residual bump...As far as my scar is concerned, the widest part is still red

but is now flat. The thinner part has turned white.

I hope that helps.

Much good luck,

Andy (Concord

MA)

Lorrie, what vertebral levels did Dr. Boachie work on, that he had to get past your ribs? I thought revision surgeons usually avoided thoracic work.

Hi Carla – from the report I

received this is what was written:

A T9 thoracoabdominal incision was made in the flank region and

carried to the suprapublic level. Subfascial dissection was performed and

subperiosteally the rib, the ninth rib was exposed and removed. The pleura was

entered. Retractors were placed and the diaphragm was detached from the chest

wall, leaving a cuff of tissue attached to the chest wall. The pleura along

the thoracolumbar space was incised longitudinally, and the retroperitoneum was

reflected medially to expose the thoracolumbar spine.

Thoracolumbar Osteotomy at T10, T11, T11-T12, T12-L1, & L1-L2.

Lorrie, your surgery sounds unusual. I've always wondered about the business of making one big osteotomy to restore lumbar lordosis. I guess it is done that way to minimize blood loss. But your osteotomies were done higher than I would have expected. Were they done to restore lumbar lordosis, or for some other purpose?

The osteotomies were done where my

original fusion was done. My fusion started at T6 – so the doctor

started the osteotomies at T10 – if he didn’t do them he said my

left shoulder would have dipped down.

Interesting, my left shoulder has always " dipped down " I think that

is why they can never cut my hair straight!
