Guest guest
A friend of mine was asking me if any of you folks could give her a recommendation for her 10 year old. She needs a childrens scoliosis surgeon in the Boston area. I thought I would see if any of you knew of someone. She is in a brace now, fears it is getting worse and has little confidence in the doctor she has. She did not give me his name. Thanks,
Guest guest
My daughter was refered to Boston Children's but they were only booking 8 months out just for a visit. I looked into the Shriner's hospital in Springfield MA. They have some great DR's there. The Dr's are some of the top in their field. We have been there for 3 years and I am very pleased. I also like not having all the congestion in Boston to deal with on a regular basis. Plus they do not charge the patient anything not even co-pays. She had surgery last month there on her chest but still gets watched for her scoliosis. Guest guest
, I would have her look into Shriners' Hospital in Springfield. That's where I had my surgery in 1971, and they still offer all treatment without cost to the parents. I don't know if they do non-surgical cases, but if she needs surgery it might be a good option. Sharon PS: OH, MY GOSH, I DON'T BELIEVE THIS! http://www.shrinershq.org/shc/springfield/team.html Dr. DeWeese was one of the residents who did my Harrington rod surgery in 1971. He's now a staff surgeon at Shriners! His bio says he did a residency at BU from 1970 to 1973, without mentioning it was at Shriners'. He was my favorite doctor there, and really seemed to like the kids. I've tried in the past to Google his name and never came up with anything. He looks a little different nearly 35 years later, but that's him! Guest guest
Wow, Jolynn, I just sent a post to about Shriners', and here you had already recommended them. Have you met Dr. DeWeese? I could have fainted when I saw his picture in the staff directory. Such a nice man. Even when I was going through the Risser/Harrington misery I couldn't help liking him. Guest guest
, you could give her Dr. DeWeese's name. I don't know if any one of the principle surgeons there specializes in scoliosis, but he definitely did scoli surgery at one time. Things work a little differently at Shriners. They do a lot of educating of residents, and as I recall, at least in 1971, they had lots of surgeons discussing how best to proceed. I wasn't " Dr. So-and-So's patient " . I had a trio of residents assigned to my surgery (including DeWeese), who were under the supervision of the chief and staff surgeons. To be seen at Shriners you need to find a Shriner to sponsor the child. My dad found my shriner by word of mouth, but your friend could probably call a local Shrine temple to inquire, or maybe Jolynn knows a Shriner who can help. Guest guest
Probably I have met them all I think. 3 DRs Came in on our first visit for like an hour. They examined/talked about me more than my daughter. My daughter said " I thought we were here for me " . She is fairing far better than I did at that age as her curves go. No Brace yet and hopefully may not need surgery but who knows for sure. Jolynn > >> > >> A friend of mine was asking me if any of you folks could give > >> her a recommendation for her 10 year old. Guest guest
You do not need to be sponsored by a Shriner anymore to be a patient. They used to do that but they stopped. I am not sure why. " Shriners Hospitals are open to all children regardless of race, religious or cultural background. It is not necessary to know a Shriner to obtain care. Although we are proud that the care we provide to our patients is the very best, it is our policy never to charge a patient or parent for our services. Any child up to the age of 18 may be eligible for care if there is a good chance we can help to improve the child's condition. " http://www.shrinershq.org/shc/springfield/about.html They will take any patient under 18. If any child goes there prior to the age of 18 they are eligable for free care until the age of 21 at any Shriners Hospital that treats their issue regardless of whether they recieve all their care there or not. Meaning if we never go back there and then 10 years later our daughter can go to any Shriners Orthopedic hospital at the age of 19 and be cared for in the same manor at no charge because she was a patient. At least that is what was explained to us. This is nice because at some point kids don't have great coverage but they are too old to get dependant insurance coverage. You don't even have to participate in the research if you don't want to. I do because research is what helps future patients. Guest guest
Oh, Ok. I might have read that before. I checked the new patient application, and it asks for the name of a sponsoring Shriner, but I guess that's optional now. Guest guest
Hi Jolynn, Hopefully, watching and monitoring will do it for your daughter. I have a large family 4 neices and 1 nephew have the disease but all have minor angles at this point. We just keep, watching, monitoring and praying and wishing for the best. > > >> > > >> A friend of mine was asking me if any of you folks could give > > >> her a recommendation for her 10 year old.
