---Vonnie,

I do agree with Cam, when he signs your back and has you sign all

these papers that tell you all the god awful things that can happen

to you...I will admit, I cried like a big old baby....I cried so hard

that my sister started crying. She was with me until they took me

back....I started thinking about my kids etc....Rand was sensative to

it all and quickly had me sign so they could get me started on

something..becasue until you sign they will not give you anything..I

just wanted something to calm me down, they started an IV and then I

was fine...drugs, amazing things!!!Next thing I knew I was in

recovery...I felt pretty good post first stage becasue of that stuff

he wraps your spine in. It was second stage I felt a bit more

crappy...,PA

Cam,Yes I am in the golden week and day by day getting more nervous and trying to remember if I have everything done before I go in..Sure if I'm there on that date come on over to visit..But I'm hoping I will be home in between the 2 surgery's..How long were you in the hospital for your 1st stage? about 5-7 days? Who knows as long as everything comes out alright..Vonniecammaltby <cammaltby@...> wrote: Vonnie,When I was making another post to the calender last night I noticed you are within the "golden week". You know, like any master artist signs his work. I had my tummy signed

too! Don't worry, it's not a tattoo or anything.

It has always amused me that the nurse at spine hospital writes on my back before my pain management treatments. I talk to the doctor before he does the procedure and I am awake during it! So, it is not like he is going to stick the needles in the wrong place. I guess it must just be standard hospital procedure. You know, like any master artist signs his work. Messenger with Voice. PC-to-Phone calls for ridiculously low rates.

Yeah, ok, I guess. What do they use, a felt-tip pen? I just hadn't heard

of it, and I thought it might be a metaphore of some sort. It has been said

that Mozart " signed " his work, but it's with a signature cadence style.

Some future connoiseur of early 21st century scoliosis surgery may refer to

the twin curved rods hanging off a sawed-off Harrington, with twin

enstein bolts through the ilium as Rand's " signature " . Hmm... our

x-rays as collector's items...

:^)

Vonnie,

I am very glad to learn that all went well for part 1. I bet you will

feel better each day and you WILL be ready for part 2. Probably just

hard to imagine that today. Please try not to worry and let yourself

SLEEP!!! Ann

Vonnie,

I was only scheduled to wait a week and it turned in to a month (six

weeks total between stage one and two). Yes, it is really tough to get

psyched for another go-around, especially when you start feeling

better after the first one, but know that they wouldn't put us through

this if it weren't for sake of the very best outcome possible...at

least that's what I kept telling myself AND, it will be easier to

recover since your body has already begun that process.

I'm thinking about you!

Vonnie,

What a delight to see a post when I logged in tonight! I think of you

often and hoped you were doing alright. I hope the lidocaine does the

trick. How long do they say it will be before you know? Are they

thinking about one of those pain pumps for you? Are you still just

working with Rand or is he transitioning you to Pain Managment now also?

just checked in last month...and we hear from her from time to

time. She is doing well...her last post was #21593...basically she

doen't have to go back for another checkup until her 5 year anniversary

unless something comes up.

I hope you get some relief soon and know that I am rooting for you.

Cam,Yeah I'm still hanging on there, other than pain I would be great.I still work but after that I can't do anything because of the pain. The lidocaine did nothing for me last week and I have to do it one more time in May but I don't think it's going to work. What is the pain pump? What is it in your body?Never heard of it.Yes I am still working with Rand and the pain clinic at NEBH..Rods that broke never moved so we are leaving them for now.If it would mean I would have no pain if I had another operation I would do it but he don't think it would give me that much relief. So that's where I am now..How are you doing with yours? Now that I remember you were on the retreat bending and it looked like you were doing great. You all looked like you were having a ball there.Maybe some year I will be able to attend.Have great day! Hi Vonnie,

It sounds like the pain clinic is being very thorough in slowly

seeing if they can improve your daily life with the least amount of

intervention...and I am sure that is a good thing....but I know you

must feel at your wits end too.

The site I put up earlier in the week that talks about good pain

management had an arthritis clip that said something along the lines

that some people may never get to a point where there is complete

resolution of the pain...but that good pain managment would set goal

with the patient so that they would feel like they were able to get

some of their " life " back. In other words, if your wish is to be able

to spend a few hours a week up and around after work, then perhaps

they can work with you to achieve that particular goal even if they

can't make it happen 24/7. That made sense to me.

A pain pump is inserted into the body and delivers pain meds directly

to the spinal cord and, as I understand it, is a " pemanant solution "

to what has to be a " permanant problem " . I think one of the benefits

is that the meds are useful at MUCH lower doses so the side effects

can be less troublesome. They are not without risk or complications

though. Anyway....please understand that I am not promoting or

shilling in favor of them, or the Medtronic system in particular, but

here is their website which has information on them which you might

want to " cut and paste " to your browser to look through so you can

see what they are:

http://www.medtronic.com/neuro/paintherapies/pain_treatment_ladder/dru

g_infusion/drug_drug_deliv.html

If nothing else, it might help to talk to your pain doctor about

finding a way to get some hope back in your life. You sound like you

are pretty down and I am so sorry you are hurting. I wish there was

more I could do. If you want to have a goal to work for...the next

Retreat is 13 months away...it would be awesome if you could come!

Please let us know how things go...

Take Care, Cam
