Guest guest
Hi, Vonnie. Dr. Rand said he thought I'd need 10 days. But he did tell me about your relatively quick recovery, I think, for a reason. I don't imagine he'd object if I asked to be given more time between stages. Here's a question I don't think I've seen answered. Do the requirements of no bending, etc., etc. begin after the first stage? Just wondering how limited I'll be between, as I'm considering whether I want to stay in rehab or go home. My initial reaction was that I want to lie around in rehab and eat good food, but since then I'm thinking I'll miss a lot about being here. Plus there's a lifetime limit of benefits on our current insurance, and given my husband's severe diabetes and my spine issues and MS, I think we want to be frugal even with the insurance company's money. Guest guest
Sharon, I had posterior surgery December 20 and walked a mile on January 2. I felt pretty darned good between my stages and was home (my real home) from December 31 to January 22. But, after the second surgery, I was miserable. It might be worth discussing with Dr. Rand and findout out how extensive your stage one will be. I know for certain now that when you hear someone say " everyone is different " it means just that. I'm really excited for you. You deserve a practically pain-free life and I'm still holding out for Kathy (in Houston) and Carole M. as well! kam > Dr. Rand mentioned someone who had taken a long break between stages and had > just completed stage 2, and I said " Vonnie Callahan " ! Guest guest
Hi Sharon... I think it really depends on what's done, but I can't imagine that bending, twisting, or lifting would ever be allowed between stages. I've known people who were on 100% bed rest after their first stage because their spines were left relatively vulnerable between stages. Guest guest
I see, . Thanks. Dr. Rand did talk in terms of my being able to sit up after the first stage, and that after freeing up the one mobile joint some patients feel they can already stand a little straighter. I imagine there would be a much greater risk of damaging nerves, etc., during that half-done phase. I know we're all different, but I'll just plan on being pretty much incapacitated during that period. Guest guest
---Vonnie, Sounds like you are doing real good? Do you feel each day gets a bit better? I called Rands office yesterday to get an appt for August, my 6/7 month appt, it sounds weird to say that...but Priscilla was not in so I have to call back today. My daughter was just sent home with a school note stating that they detected slight scloiosis, so ofcourse I was a bit concerned. Cam had recommened I ask if Rand could see her when I go up, I am going to ask Priscilla when I talk to her today. Guest guest
Sharon, I know you addressed this to Vonnie and I am sure she can best speak to the idea of going home between....because she did it! I do remember PT telling me the no BLT rule before the first time they got me up after stage one. So, assuming you are staged the same way Vonnie and I were, I would plan on a very low key lifestyle between. You will not be gardening, shopping, cleaning. You will be resting, more than likely. Mind you I only had 6 days between....by the last day I was sitting up for short periods of time but not very comfortably. PA had the next longer incarcertion so it might be instructive to hear how she did in the later part of that 2 week wait.... Of course, it really is a question for DrRand or Priscilla... Take Care, Cam
Guest guest
---Cam, Hee heee you are sooo funny incarceration!!! I was told no BLT too. I was in the rehab so I could always 'Ring " for help or look out the door and try to track Maureen down....SHaron, if you go to Rehab at Jordon, make Maureen you new best friend!! SHe will help you get anything you drop off of the floor and if you do not drop anything you will just be laying/sitting around watching tv, eating and going to PT and OT......if you go home you will have to be really careful not to do anything crazy...like laundry etc.., PA In , " cammaltby " <cammaltby@...> wrote: > > Sharon, > > I know you addressed this to Vonnie and I am sure she can best speak > to the idea of going home between....because she did it! > > I do remember PT telling me the no BLT rule before the first time they > got me up after stage one. Guest guest
Thanks for the tips, . I might enjoy hanging around rehab, but I'll miss my critters, my garden, oh yeah, and my husband! I might go home to save insurance money. I sure hope the people who tell me they want to help will be willing to change filter pads in my pond filters, because I'm sure I won't be able to do that without bending, and I will surely want to do it if it needs doing! Guest guest
Sharon.yes there's no BLT after the 1st stage also.I went home after the 1st stage and didn't need to go to rehap they told me.I think you'll be more comfortable at home in your own bed..I also came home after the 2nd stage too, they told me I didn't need the rehap then either..I think if you live close enough you can go home if your up to it.Of course people from out of state have to stay in rehap cause I couldn't even think of getting on a plane after the 2nd. OH BOY NO WAY!!! I hope all goes well with your surgery's....VonnieSharon Green <sharon.green18@...> wrote: Hi, Vonnie. Dr. Rand said he thought I'd need 10 days. Guest guest
Dear PA, So sorry to hear of your daughter's scoliosis, it sure can be a blow after what we have gone through. Good to hear that Rand will be watching her. We caught my daughters at age nine, and know their curves can b-bop around during growth. Ceili's went fron 17, down to 5, back up to 10, to 17, and then to 28, during her five years of being treated. She has been braced the last year, has finished growing, and has her curve stable and has had it go down to 25, so we just finished treatment. So know while this is a blow, it's something you just have to get through, it doesn't mean that she is you, and that her curve will get the way yours did. Did I wish that I hadn't passed it along, sure, but she has things I never had, a excellent doc, state of the art care, and a parent that knows the beast inside and out. I'm praying for you both, and if you need me just ask. Hard to go through this a second time, it just sucks, but you have tons of support here! Re: [ ] Re: Oh, by the way, Vonnie... Guest guest
Thanks, Vonnie. I told Dr. Rand I'd probably prefer to lie around rehab and eat good food, but later I thought of all I would miss about home. There might be some rehab limit on my insurance too, so I guess it will remain to be seen. Sharon Re: [ ] Oh, by the way, Vonnie...
