Guest guest
Hi guys! I really need to vent. I'm exhausted...LONG DAY! It's 1 a.m. & I just got home...gotta get up at 6 a.m., but I want to tell you all how I feel I've been discriminated against at work. I want to know what you guys think. I had my performance review tonight at the restaurant (six months late). I haven't had a raise in a year. just so you know. I've been through a lot health-wise this year, so you know...it wasn't exactly foremost in my mind. Anyway, my culinary manager starts off by telling me that he did reviews on the entire culinary staff (both 1st and 2nd shift) and that he gave me the highest marks of anyone. Now I'm used to having excellent reviews, but this one was just way over the top, and I have to admit I was a little surprised. I do feel like my health issues have slowed me down some and maybe I'm not as patient with people. But he had nothing but wonderful things to say to me, and he said that Kemal and I are are the most caring, hardest working people in the restaurant. So I'm feeling really good...just can't wait to see my raise, you know...they always save the best for last. Well, imagine my surprise when I see that my culinary manager had written in for me to get a very nice raise, but that the general manager had scratched it out and said " no raise. " He made a comment that said " does not expo. " Okay, " expo " is the position I've had for years. It's like being a team leader & you're responsible for pretty much everything. You're in charge of the kitchen (next to the manager). Well, ya'all who have been in this forum awhile will probably remember me having lots of problems at work with not being able to breathe and my chest hurting and stuff. After testing, I learned I had developed seafood allergies, and that from breathing in so many of the seafood fumes, it turned into asthma. I never had allergies before. I ate seafood with no problems. I never had asthma before. This is something I developed as a result of my job. I've done a lot of research and it's very common that people who don't have seafood allergies will develop them after being exposed to it a lot on the job. Many of them also develop asthma as a result. So anyway, I had to step down from that position of " expo " because that part of the kitchen is just nothing but seafood fumes. They put me in another position where the fumes aren't nearly as bad. That position is " alley coordinator. " I have to garnish all the plates and make sure everything is perfect before it goes out to the table. I also have to comply with HACCAP regulations, making sure all food is cooked to the right temperature. In most restaurants, the person who does this job is expo, but that's not the case here. I did this job before, and now I'm back again. So it's an important job. I play a vital role in that store, and I do an awesome job. My culinary manager (and the other managers) all say I never turn my back on a standard and it's true. Well, my culinary manager doesn't agree with the general manager. He doesn't think it's fair that I am not getting a raise. So I wrote a one page letter (we are allowed to give written responses to our reviews) outlining why it's not fair that I don't get a raise. If my general manager still refuses to give me a raise, I am going to his supervisor. I feel like I'm being discriminated against. Yeah, expo is the highest paid position in the restaurant typically (next to managers), but that doesn't mean that just because I had to change my position that I shouldn't get a raise, particularly since my asthma is work-related. I will take this as far as I have to. Do you all think I'm being discriminated against? Asthma is a disability which is protected by some act (Americans with Disabilities...I think that's what it's called.) Thanks for letting me vent and get this off my chest. Thanks in advance for your feedback! Ya'all have a good one & wish me luck on my algebra test tomorrow! Hugs, Sheila

You get rave reviews from your Manger - he is probably the one that really knows the quality of work you perform - and the GM is probably trying to get a raise himself by being greedy and not giving out raises. Sounds like you are going through the proper channels in order to fight this. Go for it! good luck! > > From: " Kemal And Sheila Kalajdzic " <kemalandsheila@...> > Date: 2004/03/09 Tue AM 01:20:54 EST > hypothyroidism > Subject: how my asthma = no raise at work --OT > >

Guest guest
Hi Keisha, I've worked at the restaurant I think 7 years now. Yeah, it's been a year since my last raise (50 cents). I dunno how many raises I've gotten, but hourly rate has doubled. My husband will get a raise (I think my manager said 40 cents). One of our co-workers got a raise...dunno about the others. not everyone's gotten their evaluations yet. I will definitely check out that www.lawyers.com site...maybe this weekend. I'm not gonna let them jerk me around...no way! You know me, girl...I'm a fighter!!! I work unbelievably hard. Yesterday I slowed down though. I was mad. Well, Keisha, I gotta run. We've gotta go out for awhile...going to dinner. I'm not cooking tonight!!! Thanks for your support cutie!! Hugs, Sheila Keisha <californiakh@...> wrote: Hello Sheila,, It is Keisha..
