Hi ...

Since your brace was probably custom made, there would not really be

any value to it, although I see them from time to time on eBay. (You

don't want to know why there's a market for them!)

You might ask your surgeon's office about the bone stimulator, to see

if they have a patient who could use it. I doubt, however, that you'd

be able to take a tax deduction for it, since I assume it was paid for

by your insurance company.

The only way you can use it as a medical expense for deduction is if

you paid for it or any portion of it on your taxes for out of pocket

medical expenses. Each year between me, the children etc I keep all

receipts for anything I spent out of pocket, even copays, it adds

up,last year alone, $11,000 out of pocket, and I have what all would

consider excellent health insurance. So if youpaid any amount for any

thing meds, toilet seats, canes keep the receipt for when you do your

taxes!! , PA

The braces are not custom made, they go by measuring the turso,

breast. hips and naval. They have small, med, large, XL. The bone

stimulator was not paid by insurance but Out of pocket since my

medical equip cap was reached with one of my braces, I have three.

Thanks,

Wow, do any of you other folks have off the shelf braces? You learn

something new every day! (I knew that some docs use them, but I don't

think I'd ever heard of any of the top revision docs doing so.)

, you must have a boat load of medical expenses. :-( My

understanding is that bone stims cost a small fortune. As mentioned

before, you can deduct medical expenses from your income tax if they

reach a certain level, but I doubt that any non-profit could utilize

the brace or the stim in order to give you another deduction.

I wasn't casted for the TLSO I got - he just measured me, as

said. I was quite surprised, and questioned it at the time. And

I'm convinced that is why the thing never fit me properly.

Dear and ,

After surgery, my decompression I kept waiting for them to wrap me in plaster to make a form for my brace like they did in the seventies. No, they just measured the front side of me and came back a day later with a brace. I used the same brace thru my decompression recovery and thru my two revisions. I did have more holes drilled into it and some tweeking, but that was it.

Now when my daughter got fitted for her brace, they put her on a frame, and wrapped her in plaster. Her brace was to stop progression, and had a push pad to pull over her torso. In the brace her curve would go from 29 degrees to only three while wearing it.It was expensive, 1800.00 dollars, of which I paid a five hundred dollar deductable, plus twenty percent.

maybe you should look to see if the braces could be used by doc's who volunteer to do surgeries in third world areas, I know Kumar did two weeks worth this summer in Africa, maybe they could be used in that way and you could get a write off for that. I just threw mine out, just wanted it gone, but if it could have helped someone else I'll be sorry for that.

You know I didn't know it was off the shelf. I thought since I was

measured in the OR that they custom made it. It wasn't until last

month when I talked to the manufacturer and not the front sales

company did I find out that they catogorize the measurements and

send the brace off that way. Did everybody else get some sort of

mold made? then a brace?

I think mine might have ben more like you suggest. It was an open

metal frame with padding at the breast, pubis, and hips and it had

adjustible straps with snaps and velcro....no plaster form was made.

exactly, my brace was all adjustable via velcro except for the

thoracic piece, that was via a screw up and down slide kind of thing.
