Peggy,

I don't mean to be telling you what to do, but unless everything goes

perfectly, you might not even be HOME in 10 days. I have not had

revision surgery, but I have listened to the voices of many who have,

and I cannot think of one person who was ready to be left home alone

at the 10 day mark.

will be back in Alabama to work. I am having an A/P fusion with

cages at L4/L5 and L5/S1 with fusion from L1-sacrum with wing

instrumentation into the pelvis. At 10 days will I be able to shower

by myself? Will I be able to get myself out of bed in the morning?

Will I be able to dress myself by lying on the bed? Will I be able

to manage my basic needs alone???

Wow I guess all doctors are different, mine said to plan for a 7-10 day stay in the hospital and to plan to have someone with you for at least the first month because you will be helpless and you don't want to do anything to undo what was done in surgery. You stand the chance if you do to much that you can loosen a screw, bend a rod or even one can break. With my daughter's recent scolo surgery they told me someone has to be with her for 24 hours a day for at least the first month, mainly because she was helpless but also the heavy medication she was on. She also could not take a shower by herself for at least the first 2 weeks, she would sit on a shower chair and I would sit outside the shower and hold on to her leg or arm, just because of dizziness that occurs when you sometimes lay in bed to long or sit in a chair to long.......and also because you just are plan tired, she would also say sometimes that she felt heavy..........so I would never take a chance with her

so I always stayed right with her My personal advice is to see if you can stay longer, I personally am glad I am staying that long. Granted I am the first one to say I HATE hospitals (really bad experience from first scolo surgery) but I also know the longer you stay, you will be better able to handle coming home. My daughter stayed 6 days after her operation they would not consider her leaving till she could get up on her on and have a bowel movement, which happened on the 5th day. My husband is planning on taking FFLA for at least 2 months, he will stay the first full month then we will go day by day. You may want to talk to your doctor and let him know that you will only have someone for 10 days......just a thought or maybe set up a calander with your church group and have someone sit with you........ Just a thought Peggy Greene

Peggy,

There is no way to know for sure you will only be in the hospital for

4 days. Ask who had complications, or Kam who had to have

three surgeries not just the two.

Naturally if you have complications you will be in longer but if it goes as planned my notes say I will be in the hospital 3-4 days. I am sorry that is unbelievable to some of you but many of you are still having your revisions staged one week apart. I'm having so little done that mine is being done all in one day. Each case is individual that is why I would like to hear from people that have had such a short fusion if there are any. Maybe I will be the first one.

Peggy,

I just want to clarify that I had my surgery staged a week apart, but

had about the same amount of surgery you are having...the difference

in one day vs. two day isn't really isn't what makes the discharge

time up....it's when you hit the benchmarks. I was discharged on the

6th day after the second surgery. If you have been following Edies

story, she had similar surgery monday and was discharged friday

night...just a day longer than your surgeon was saying...so while I

think 3-4 days sound exceedingly short...I think your discharge dates

will really depend on how well you do, and to some degree the social

worker and pt persons assessment of how safe your home will be given

whatever physical shape you appear to them in that post op time.

As to having your husband gone 10 days after surgery...I would have

felt very vulnerable and fearful. I probably could have gotten by for

blocks of time...but I think I would have wanted someone in the house

while I was showering and doing my walking. I just felt too fragile.

Perhaps you can arrange for someone to come to you later in the

morning and hang out til after lunch and then check on you later in

the evening. You will be sleeping a lot at first, but after a little

while, as long as you can amuse yourself and get around the house

safely I think you can set things up with a helper so that you can

manage.

Didn't you say that your daughter was going to be home from college?

She should at least be able to help get meals set out and be in an

out, but around enough to see that you are safe.

My motto in this whole thing is " plan for the worst, hope for the

best " .

Take Care, Cam

We have 2 insurance policies right now with him working which is greatly beneficial for covering the cost of the surgery. I'm not worried about after surgery because I'll still have my policy through my corporation.

There will be people coming by every day to check on me. I am going to find someone who is at home all the time that I can give a house key to so that if someone is unable to get me to answer the door or the phone they can get the key from that person and get into the house. If I feel I just can't be alone I'll call Dr. Hey and tell him I need home health aide for a few weeks until my husband comes home again on May 31.

Peggy, I am not sure what you mean by short fusion? I am having revision done in one stage, posterior and interior with fusion to the sacurm all in one day with removal of L5 and S1 which will be replaced with cages.........and some more things Peggy Greene <jpgunlimited@...> wrote: Naturally if you have complications you will be in longer but if it goes as planned my notes say I will be in
