Since the Dow Corning litigations there have been fears that implants cause swelling, disease and increased risk of cancer, which have led to many people, Pamela among them, having their implants removed. Encouraging, perhaps, for those of us at risk from breast cancer (i.e. a lot of us: the estimate is now 1 in 12 women at risk) but also worrying in the implication that more women may seek implants on the basis of such research. Cosmetic breast augmentation currently costs around £3,500, a figure beyond the reach of the vast majority of women: are women unable to afford this going to feel disadvantaged, not only for the usual male-oriented reasons, but because they see themselves as unable to afford something that might protect them from cancer? As we have noted before in this magazine, there is already a tendency these days for many surgeons to treat small or post-pregnancy breasts as a disease. The development of reconstructive technologies, for women who have had mastectomies, is obviously a positive option: the development of a society where women are made to feel uncomfortable without reconstructed breasts is decidedly negative..
