Guest guest
I had my 6 month check today. As I walking from the parking garage to the office building I met up with Dr. Hey and Jaclyn. He called me by name (didn't just recognize me as a patient but knew I was Peggy), asked how I was doing, and asked how my daughter was doing in college. He must have a great memory! He said he would see me in the office but that was all I saw of him. I saw Brittany at my appt. On the front view of the x-ray there was a shadow under the iliac screws but looking at it from the side view and more close-up, everything was fine. So I don't have a screw loose! The bone graft/fusion mass also looks good. I can now lift up to 30 pounds. I asked about bending and she said not until a year was up. She told me I will get most of the flexibility I had before surgery back but there would be some yoga moves I won't be able to do as before. But anything is better than nothing. I'm anxious to really exercise but I guess I'll have to wait until May to do anything involving bending. I also asked Brittany about wearing heels. She told me to start low but I could try it. I haven't been able to wear heels without walking with my knees bent, at least not anything higher than 2 inches. I went shopping on my way home and bought a pair of black pumps to wear with dresses and skirts. They had a really soft sole and even a padded arch. The heel is just over 2 inches. I'm so excited to try them out! I mentioned to Brittany that I had sent many people their way. She said, Yes, you have. She said she just received an email from a patient I had talked to, and I said, Deb in Tampa? She said, That's the one! I'll just have to be patient and wait until May to resume all normal activities. I told her I'm so excited to be pain free that I just want to jump, do cartwheels, etc., but I have to hold myself back. She said I can do all that in May at my graduation party at my 1-year check up. Peggy

Guest guest
Congratulations Peggy for reaching that milestone and your great " report card " today. I go for my 6 month checkup in about 5 weeks and am looking forward to it too. I am also looking forward to wearing heals for once in my life. Although the surgery already has made me taller than my husband! > > I had my 6 month check today. As I walking from the parking garage to the office building I met up with Dr. Hey and Jaclyn. Guest guest
Debbie, 9 days! Wow! I bet you cannot wait to get it over and done with! I scheduled my revision for January 28th back in September and this is like slow torture - some days I can't wait to get it done and other days I wonder why I'm doing it! Life is a yoyo. On those days that I feel good and want to cancel, all I have to do is spend some time on my feet, i.e., walking through a mall or a grocery store and I am quickly reminded that my body and my life are not the same as they used to be. Good luck and I'm sure you will do just as well as Peggy. Donna > > > > I had my 6 month check today. As I walking from the parking garage > to the office building I met up with Dr. Hey and Jaclyn. Guest guest
To Peggy and everyone, Congrats on your check-up Peggy. Enjoy those heels. I see Dr. Hey for my 6 week check-up on the 21st of this month. Have to talk with him about my knees. I needed knee replacement befor the revision surgery but didn't think I wanted replacement until I could stand upright and straighten the knees. Now that I'm standing and walking normally again the knees are going crazy. I can't bend the (L) one without exteme pain. I don't know how long I will have to wait until I can get the replacement surgery. There are a lot of exercised with leg lift lifts, etc, after replacement. Will keep everyone posted. I want to say also that I am thrilled with my revision surgery and would do it again in a minute. Dr. Hey is great and I'm having little pain except in the knees. I'm off all the oxycontin, oxycodone, and am taking Ultram ER 300mg for my knees, which is a prescription from my rheumatologist. Also, thanks for the support. I am also more of a lurker than a poster but I have felt the support of everyone and have gained much information. Sometimes I think people with flatback feel alone because so few people know what it is and what we go through. I had someone tell me yesterday that her friend had " back surgery " three weeks ago and is driving, shopping, and in general doing anything she wants to, The un-spoken question was 'so why are you still on pain meds and not back at work'? They just don't know do they? -- In , " Peggy Greene " <jpgunlimited@...> wrote: > > I had my 6 month check today. Guest guest
Betty, I am so glad to hear that you're doing so well with your back. That's great. Hope you get your knee situation fixed soon. About the "unspoken question" - about someone/anyone who has had surgery and got their problem fixed, up, out and about, doing what they please and still utilizing disability benefits in any way makes it hard for the ones who don't get their problem fixed, can't get out and about and aren't physically able to work ... of course, not saying that everyone does that, or that anyone in this forum does - but it is a common problem in general - but everybody knows that! So, to you, and all of the other new revisionees I hope for continued success and a productive, pain free life! G - NC [ ] Re: 6 month check up To Peggy and everyone,Congrats on your check-up Peggy. Guest guest
I remember with my first Harrington Rod Surgery, after more than 3 months flat on my back, when I started to walk with a brace under my clothes and was given the lifting restrictions, etc. I was 20 years old, looking young and healthy. So people gave me disapproving looks and grumbled when I would ask them to help me carry something (e.g. luggage in the airport) or do anything for me. Although I would have rather died than wear a visible brace over my clothes then, at 55, I think I would welcome a VISIBLE brace should I have revision surgery. People don't understand what they can't see. And true, even my family who lived through this with me the first time around, is telling me since back surgery has improved so much since 1972 that this new surgery will be like a " piece of cake " . When I was younger I didn't want their sympathy. Now that I am older, I welcome all sympathetic/empathetic gestures! -- > > > > I had my 6 month check today. Guest guest
Donna, I know the waiting is sometimes the hardest part. Now that I'm so close I can't wait to get the surgery behind me and start my recovery process. Debbie J. > > > > > > I had my 6 month check today. Guest guest
Cam, Thank you for your kind words it meant alot to me. Yes I agree about being off balance so I am going to start doing low impact aerobics, sometimes I trip over my own two feet or miss aim a doorway so I agree with you about the off balance thing. I did get the corizone shot Friday and it helped some not all but some and I agree I think once I start gaining strength it will help n the long run. I never really realized how much pain can effect you emotionally and they way you think and I know see it is a touchy subject and I was bit too emotional when I was writing and reading. I wish I could be different but I am not and I have to deal with whom I have become and hopefully learn from it, so that one day I can get back to that wonderful and carefree and happy very happy person that made everybody laugh (I have been described as Carol Burnett). Its hard to get out of the dark hole I fell into and I need to take control. I just don't know how to do it right now. Thank you again for the kind words they did put a smile on my face. > > , > > Sounds like your 6 month appointment went very well! Guest guest
, how are you doing? My surgeon moved to town PA and I have only been seeing a nurse at the hospital since he left..since last September. I have an appointment with someone for my one year checkup but am looking for someone in the Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo, Albany regions that might be good to use for this followup. I know you had Dr Hamill. Did you like him? I have to get an opinion on the position of a couple of the screws. > > > > I had my 6 month check today.
