Hi!, I'm new!

Hello everyone!

I'm new and excited to finally find others like me. I came across

this completely by accident and have been kinda hanging back just

reading the other posts. I had the harrington rod surgery in 1983 in

Seattle, WA. I guess I've been pretty lucky so far because I haven't

really had any complications. I've been a scuba diver, had 3

children and even volunteered on a fire department for a year.

Before the surgery, my spine was shaped like an " S " , and with the

surgery they were able to get it down to just about 15 degree single

curve. So I still have one shoulder that sticks out slightly. Since

the birth of my last child, I get occasional lower back pain, but

that is about it. I'm sorry to hear about those who are trying to

get disability and keep getting turned down. Does anyone know of

doctors in my area, (Seattle, WA) that specialize in this? I'm long

overdue for a checkup and I haven't checked with my regular doctor

yet. (i'm kinda scared to.) I know it's silly, but the thought of

additional surgery etc freaks me out! I also wanted to say thank you

to whomever started this forum. Its wonderful!!

Hi All, I am glad to have found you. I had my Harrington Rods done in 1989. I am 35 now and experiencing so much pain in my lower back, hips and legs. My surgeon/dr has since retired. I went to the Dr. that trained underneath him and had a Myleogram, MRI, CT Scan, etc and they don't see anything wrong and so just act like all is fine. Now, I am trying to get back into him and they can't see me for FOUR months. The pain is beginning to be unbearable. I need some suggestions on how to get into another doc or him. Hi Cristl...

I've found that doctors who have done very little revision surgery

often tell their patients there is nothing that can be done for them,

instead of referring them to a qualified surgeon who can do something.

Where are you located?

Hi , I've spoken with you over on the scoliosis.org website. You actually referred me over here. I feel pretty confident that I am going to a very good surgeon. Dr. Dickson did my surgery in 1989 and this new guy, Dr. Hanson, trained under him. I finally (just 15 min ago) got an appt that isn't 4-6 months away. It is August 15th. Thank goodness!! Until then I guess I will live with the pain. Last time I went to see him he said all my tests looked ok but I am in major pain. I know back pain..... I had a severe s-curve, brace, etc and this is the worst. THank you for responding. If you know another doc in Houston please let me know. I have researched and he is the only specialist I can find here.... Amazing actually with our medical center. Thanks, Cristl Racine

Hi , Me again. I read on scoliosis.org a while back where you posted Dr. Dickson's personal address. This is the surgeon that did my surgery. I wish he was still in practice. Do you know if he works at all? Yeah that's what happened to me the dr. I went to before Dr.Rand told

me there's nothing they can do for me after he opened me up 2 times

to try to do a quick fix in 2002 and 2003..Had I known I needed

revision I would have had that in 2002..He was a regular spine dr. at

a big hospital in boston..After I saw Dr.Rand I called him up and

yelled at him why he didn't tell me I neesed a revision instead of

doing a quick fix on me.He said he didn't want me to go through that

kind of big operation..Well that's for me to decide not him so I had

2 opeerations for nothing.So he also told me there's nothing I can do

for you anymore after the 2 surgery's didn't work..I was so pissed

off at him..So you really need to see a revision specialist not a

I know he is retired but thought perhaps he did some sort of consultations. However, he was pretty old when he did my surgery in 1989.
