Dear ,

I'd love to meet you! Perhaps when you're up to it we could meet half

way.

Just now, reading up on your Dr. Hu. She sounds extremely qualified -

there are so many to choose from; how do you know?

Would be interested to know how you ended up at UCSF. Before my

second surgery I saw Dr. Steve Garfin at UCSD. What he proposed seem

so drastic that I went back to the dr. that had done my first surgery -

big mistake. Live and learn.

Again, you're in my prayers.

Jane -

I learned to find the best qualified revision specialists the hard

way....by going ahead and trusting doctors I knew to operate without

knowing what I know now. (Who happened to also be my original

surgeons from back in 1977!) You can read my story in the Files.

But thank God for this group on the internet! I found my way here

several years after my revision surgery in 2001, and it was through

this group that I found the right doctors to see. Most are on the

East Coast, but we have one in Texas and in San Francisco. I went

and consulted with them both last summer, then decided to go with

Dr. Hu. How I'm praying that this will by my final journey! And

yes, we could possibly meet somewhere near Temecula - I have quite a

bit of family there. Also out the other directions too - San

Clemente and Huntington Beach. (I know, I know...what the heck am I

doing up here in Victorville!)

I'm off to finish packing as we leave at 10:00 tomorrow morning. Not

that I'll be able to sleep tonight.....

Good morning, LLewlyn and all - I agree wholeheartedly!! What matters

most is the capability of the guy standing over you in the OR.

Before my second surgery I saw a UCSD orthopedic surgery - Dr. Steve

Garfin. The surgery he outlined was so agressive thatI chickened out

and stuck with my first surgery surgeon. Big mistake.

Do any surgeons in Southern CA come to mind?

You mentioned having to take a ferry ride to Vancover for your

upcoming appointment. By chance do you live in ? That area

is one of my favorites.

Good luck on your appointment.

To answer your question about where I live. Yes, I actually live just outside of , near the Butchart Gardens, though I did live for 13 years in . That house got too small for our family so we bought my mother's house in Central Saanich.

Dr. Hu is the only one that comes to mind, but I'm sure Racine (San Francisco Scoliosis chapter) could mention others. The head surgeon of the BC Children's hospital, (Dr. Tredwell) Scoliosis specialist, who I have as a medical advisor for the BC chapter, recommends Dr. Hu for the West Coast, if I had to go outside of Canada. Dr. Tredwell tries to attend all Scoliosis conferences, etc. so he knows who tends to keep up on the latest techniques and their abilities. He is a tough one to impress but he was impressed with Dr. Hu.

I'll let you know how may appointment went. I tend to prepare for the worst and hope for the best so I'm preparing for surgery, which most seem to eventually have, but I am open to other reasonable suggestions. My husband is planning on going with me, which is nice now that he is retired and has the time. Even though he is an electrician in the navy, by trade, he understands the mechanics of how things work, including the body. His way of thinking is strange, at times, but he is understanding how I am and the disability field (since he also helps look after my Cerebral Palsy brother and my mother). He's always finding ways to try to improve the equipment that we have to deal with. I know I'm lucky to have him and my daughters.

Llweyn - I can't remember if I replied to you or not, but I cannot

fathom waiting that long for an appointment. You must have the

patience of Job! With all the screwy things about insurance and HMOs,

I guess we should count our blessings that it doesn't take four years

to see a doctor! I wish you a very productive and encouraging

appointment! ~kam

Glad Doug is being supportive, too - that's REALLY important. My

Again, SO glad you made the decision, and please let us know how the

appointment goes.
