HI Barbara Ann -

Oh boy can I relate to the swolen feet and ankles LOL .. the cure?? Try

support hose (grandma knew best LOL). I have a problem with the hot weather

(although they swell at times for no apparent reason even in cool weather).

I've been using the support hose since last December on and off. I bought

them at a medical supply store and was fitted by a specialist there. And

the veins .. got those too .. unsightly as they may be .. they're just

another added pleasure of AIH : )

>The pedal edema is the greatest mystery to me. It began when I got sick

and I think there is some relation to liver dysfunction. It became worse

after I started on prednisone, which does cause sodium retention - even at

low doses. I've been off prednisone for 3 years and I still have this ankle

business on and off.

>Pedal edema can be a sign of some very serious problems, but we don't have

to worry about that.

>Our docs are regularly checking for signs of heart and blood clot problems,

although they may not discuss it.

>My ankles and feet can swell for no apparent reason and de-swell (new word)

just as quickly. I used to ask various doctors about it and I've never

really gotten a definitive answer. My docs know that I'm obsessive about my

appearance (especially after the physical changes, which occurred when I was

on high doses of meds). I think that they either don't know or they're not

telling me because it's now a permanent condition. I would probably go

ballistic if a doc told me that I would always have this condition, so I'm

in a don't ask, don't tell mode for self-preservation.

>I don't wear dresses or fashionable shoes any more because I never know

when I'll look down and see balloons instead of feet. I can't wear knee

high stockings under slacks because the elastic is too constricting and

makes it worse. My shoe wardrobe consists of soft comfortable ankle boot

type attire (I try to cover up what I don't want to see). I've also noticed

veins that show beneath my skin - but they don't pop out. If you ever visit

TX, I'll be the one wearing jeans and boots (not the cowboy type) in 100

degree weather, while others are walking around half naked.

>I think I have permanent damage to the walls of my veins due to the pooling

of fluid, which was so prevalent when I got sick. I have noticed that humid

hot weather will bring on swelling almost instantaneously. Whenever we go

to FL I can count on huge ankles for the duration of our visit.

>At home, here in TX, the swelling occurs when the weather changes from cool

to hot, and may last about 2 weeks. Sometimes during the winter my ankles

may poof up for a day for no apparent reason. It's very discouraging

because I can't seem to find a common denominator.

>I can't help remembering my grandmother who lived to age of 88, wearing

those black oxford type shoes and stockings rolled down around her swollen

ankles. Do you think it could be premature aging? On second thought don't

answer that.haha

Debbie,

The support hose sound like a good idea. I've worn them and have a couple

of pair of Hanes Alive, which aren't obviously support hose but do the job.

However, I can't bend over to get them on because the pressure on my

stomach from bending is too painful. It's frustrating.

Take care,

Geri

Hi Geri -

The support hose that I wear only come up just above the knees. I have

really bad circulatory problems in my legs, but the hose make my legs feel

soooooooo much better. When I need to wear them, I put them on for about 12

hours a day. After about 2 or 3 days the swelling usually subsides, but

it's actually noticeable after the first day.

Hi Geri : )

You can purchase the support hose at any medical supply store. They range

in price from $30 to $200 per pair.

Debbie,

I'll try to locate support hose. I imagine they relieve leg fatigue and

aching too? I wonder if circulatory problems also go with AIH (everything

else does). I notice that even when I'm very warm my feet are like ice

unless I'm up and around.

Take care,

Geri
