Oklahoma or Dallas sounds good to me!

Kam, I was wondering if we could have our own little Oklahoma get-

together next week.

But of course! Do you still have my contact info? I'll be in St. Louis

on Monday and do have to work, but it will be a somewhat flexible week

since the students are gone. Let me know!

Las Vegas is only being suggested as a central, easy, place everyone

would know, flight simple meeting place hun, not to meet for a huge

gambling party or anything.

Whether it be Las Vegas or California, I would love to see a

Nationwide Get Together later this year. If it's out this way, I

would love to coordinate it. Juse let me know who is serious about it!

I never mentioned anything about gambling. I'm sorry, but I do not

consider Las Vegas as a central location for the United States. If

you want to go, GREAT! I'm just saying count me out. I have no

desire to ever go there.

Dear Group,

If it was in Vegas it would be doable for me, we finally got Southwest into

Denver this year, and the only cheap flights, those 39 dollar ones are to

Vegas. Sign me up!

I don't gamble either (prefer to take non-monetary risks), but was

just talking with a friend last week who went to Vegas for a romantic

weekend with her hubby b/c mother-in-law lives in the desert of

California and agreed to take their kid for the weekend. She said they

went to a show, went to a spa and both had massages, and ate at some

lovely restaurants - didn't do one bit of gambling. It sounded great

to me!

Yes, flights are generally extremely affordable and hotels are

reasonable - that's why so many conferences are held there.

Count me in!

Kam....and I knew the real reason you are thinking, " Yeah

Vegas " .... " maybe I could sneek in a little ride..... " !

Seriously, I haven't been to Vegas in about 10 years...I would be glad

to meet there if that is what everyone can agree on. The hotel rooms

are cheap...so are flights and food....but I must say my impression of

the place has always been that I feel like I have walked through

a " looking glass " when I am there.

I remember the first time I was in town the cab driver was telling me

that one of the ten wonders of the world was there...a real live

volcano would erupt in front of my hotel....sure enough just as we

were pulling in... she blew.....it was pretty bizarre! Cam

Honestly, I'd much prefer somewhere like Dallas or St. Louis

(Southwest flies to both fairly cheap). Flights in to Dallas are the

most plentiful (of course, I could drive).

But, the overall trip would be less expensive for everyone in Vegas. I

haven't been in 20 years, to be honest - it just doesn't appeal to me -

but, meeting all of you definitely appeals to me. If meeting in Vegas

makes it more affordable and allows more people to show up, I'm all

for it!

If anyone has another affordable suggestion, please chime in!

Kam,

I could if I had to, but I would really rather not. It is hard for me

to walk very far or manage luggage. And I couldn't drive myself to the

airport. As you know I have grown kids in the Dallas area and it would

be much easier and cheaper for me to go there. My husband has little

time off and he would have to come with me. He said he even wouldn't

mine going to Oklahoma since we used to live there!

And no, I still would not want to go to Las Vegas. It is just not my

kind of town. I'm not into big hotels, or buffets, or shows, or

casinos.

I would prefer Dallas, too. I really don't like Las Vegas, but I

went there two years ago so my youngest son could play conga drums

on a record album and I videotaped the recording session and took

pictures for the album cover (I believe the album is coming out next

month!)

My oldest son is in the Air Force and stationed at Nellis, so that

was another good reason to go to Vegas.

I went at spring break time, and the hotels were definitely not

cheap. I ended up staying at a place that rents by the week, and

that was a good bargain -- my son and his new wife were living with

her sister and husband, so they were happy to use the rest of my

week at the hotel.

I was surprised how much Las Vegas has changed since I had last been

there in the 80s (I went there to buy an old MG on that trip).

Visiting the strip is almost like taking a vacation around the

world -- so many of the hotels have themes, now, and copies of the

big sites. You can visit New York, Venice, Egypt, Paris and there

are tons of roller coasters. My two boys both love roller coasters

(and so do I), so we rode most of them. I have no desire to try

the one at the top of the Stratosphere.

I took my sister-in-law and her daughter with me to help do the

driving. I would have been happy just to soak in the hot tub and

read at night, but my SIL wanted to see some cheap shows. We saw a

Neil Diamond impersonator and a hypnotist, a circus act, and some

high wire stuff. We didn't do any buffets.

My SIL probably would have had more fun if I had been able to do

more walking. We pretty much drove from one hotel to another, and

even that wasn't easy since you have to walk through the casinos to

get to the show rooms. And, after taking pictures all day, I was

pretty tired in the evenings (being a photographer is harder work

than you may imagine).

The only cheap airfare I have ever found was going to the Bahamas

this January. I have looked at the so-called cheap airfares on

Southwest, but it seems like by the time you buy a round-trip ticket

and pay the taxes, it is really not so cheap. Las Vegas was about a

14 hour drive from OKC (plus, I couldn't have taken all my camera

equipment on a plane --we rented a Lincoln and had a hard time

getting all our stuff in the car and trunk). Maybe it depends on

the time of year.

Dallas seems to be a pretty good hub for lots of airlines . . .

Actually, our son had his bachelor party in Las Vegas last spring.

It was more expensive and less fun than they thought. Maybe things

are cheaper now, I don't know. But these were guys who know how to

hunt out a good deal.

kathy,

Sorry, but, I think it's hard for all of us to walk very far (get a wheelchair in any airport) and to manage luggage (check it at the curb). I don't think this is about a sightseeing destination. It's about getting together in, hopefully, an affordable way. It's hard to find a destination that's drivable for a nationwide group.
