Dear Betty,

I hear from time to time some weird kinda thundy noises, and Kumar said it's muscles moving over hardware. I have good fusions, am five years out and doing well, but it still creeps me out a bit when it happens. I get mine usually after walking a great deal( and at that only a couple times a month).

[ ] Any back movement?

Hi all,I'm two months post-surgery and I was wondering if it is normal to feel any movement in the spine where all the instumentation is? Anyone else had this feeling of movement? I can also hear it when it moves (I think, might just be my imagination).

Betty,

I'm at 5 months post-op (wow, I can't believe it!) and I also have felt

movement and heard things in my spine. And I heard them as early as 7-

8 weeks post-op. I think the more important thing is if you feel pain

associated with the sound or movement. If so, then please call your

doc right away. Like said, I think that some of the stuff you

may be feeling is your muscles moving over your instrumentation. But

don't hesitate to call your doctor if you're worried about it, and

especially if there is any pain involved with it.

Betty, I'm 14 months out and still get a feeling of movement when I lie down on my back, and in some other situations where my back is trying to extend. Dr. Rand was pretty sure I was feeling my instrumentation moving a bit in reference to surrounding soft tissue, as my fusion is apparently quite solid.

I received titanium hardware, which was a decision Dr. Rand made while I was in the hospital, since I had mentioned I believe I am sensitive to nickel, and stainless steel contains nickel. But in a pre-surgical consultation he mentioned that one slight downside to titanium is that sometimes it squeaks! I haven't heard any squeaking -- maybe I'm too well padded. Or maybe I just don't have any squeakable hardware connections. But the movement sensation is very pronounced, and scared me the first time I was put back in the dentist's chair after my surgery.

Hi Betty -

I'm 7 weeks postop and I get this kind of bone on bone or metal on

bone sound (at least in my ears) when I move certain ways mostly when I

putting my arms up and then down. It seems to come from the thoracic

level and not the lumbar area where the new fusion is. I sometimes

wonder if the old harrington rod (he left part of it in) is unconnected

or something. Anyhow, it doesn't hurt - just creeps me out when it

happens. Does this sound anything like yours? Elaine

Sure does. I'm fused to T-11 and this feels like its below that

level. Feels like bone on bone.
