I have also had pain in that area and they always think it is your

Gallbladder-so they always test and find nothing wrong. My Gi doc doesn't

dismiss the pain though and I'm glad. He offers meds but discourages me

because I have some erosive gastritis and esophagitis and he said the

medicine would irritate that-so pick the worse of the 2 evils!

Everyone, I was remembering something my " whole body " doctor said about

estrogen in relation to autoimmune disease. He has told me that too

much estrogen can exacerbate the autoimmune diseases. I have recently

stopped taking all hormones because I noticed an increase of my liver

pain when I took it. He is trying to get a cream made with a very very

small level of estrogen in it. Normal estrogen content in those pills

is .625mg he was suggesting a .3 mgs instead..This will help my bones

from deteriorating and yet keep from making troubles with the

autoimmune things. Estrogen also causes weight gain. It enables the

body to store fat. You m ight want to ask your docs and see if testing

your hormones would give you any information on this issue.

Dear Elena:

I've been having trouble with the same kind of pain (nausea too). That's why

I'm having the endoscopy next week. I had a real bad night last night, too.

I tossed and turned for a long time and couldn't get comfortable. I've heard

it all, too.

It's muscle aches

It's irritable colon

It's all in your head

You're manifesting symptoms out of depression

I'm embarrassed to say that I have wished the pain upon many a doctor in the

past. The poor things would be in agony if all the pain that was wished on

them actually came to pass! It's sad when we have to hope something shows up

just so that we'll be believed.

Me too! I thought i was just imagining it,but its

true. my liver ache increases just before my menstrual

cycle (even though my lfts dont).

I got an ultrasound done today to try and discover why

i am having dull pain/ache in the upper centre/right

abdomen. She mentioned that my liver and gallbladder

looked ok, although shes not a doctor. I can just see

it now if the doctor evaluated the ultrasound and says

its all ok. Hes really going to think im a

hypochondriac. Its really not in my head. The pain was

even bordering being agonizing last night.

I hope I get an answer.

Lynn:

Sounds like the doctor I went to the first of July. He had no idea what AIH

was. He read the report from the hospital and when all the test wouldn't come

in until later in the afternoon.

He sat there and asked my if I had trouble eating. I told him on the high

Prednisone doses no I eat anything. He then said, that I was fat.

Bad thing to say to me.

Well I agree with all this. I have irritable bowel symdrom and the pain is on

other side! I had this pain on the right side before I knew I had liver

problems. My

I went to an ear dr. yesterday, I took an immediate dislike to him and I think

him to

me. I have never had that feeling before. He read my chart for about 2 seconds

and

said he didn't think I had maniers disease, I've had 4 drs. tell me that I did.

And

of course reading up on it, there is no doubt in my mind! I introduced my

daughter,

ten minutes later, he said " who is this your daughter " ? He had all my list of

diseases and meds and then asked me why I was taking, diuretics, and I said

because of

prednisone. Did he ask me that just to see if I could remember, or had he not

read my

chart? Then he asked me what I was taking prednisone for. Duh, he had not read

my

chart. So he is going to put me through some tests and see what he can come up

with.

If he says surgery, I know he is crazy! He is also the Dr. (I just found out)

that

did surgery on my sisters ears and did that okay, but let infection set in that

made

her deaf. So I guess I better watch out! I don't like the med profession

anyhow,

I don't think you should see this Doctor too!!.. sounds like a butcher.. I

haev IBS too, and I take the occasion LevBid.. which is a anticholigeric.

Which, I find works great.. but I still have discomfort on the right side..

so.. as I say.. c'est la vie.

IBS, thats what my doc said too..I keep sending him stuff that proves

my liver is the problem even after firing his a**.hehehe

As far as that ear doctor goes..I haven't met too many ENT doctors who

have good bedside manners. This guy seems to have NO manners..I'd find

another doctor if I were you..trust is a priority one especially when

it comes to your hearing.

Roxanne,

I too went through the process of telling my doctor when I was feeling bad

and that the numbers would be up, and sure enough they were. Terrible when

it takes this sort of thing to convince them. My " remission " had a slight

relapse, but am on the road down again (the numbers I mean) Which is good.

Feeling better every day. It will be a couple of weeks she says til I can

start to reduce the pred again. I had to put it up with the flare-up. Hope

your discomfort is short lived.

Roxanne,

I can't agree with the menstrual cycle having anything to do with the URQ

pain, I haven't had them since I first got sick. That theory doesn't work

in my case.

I too suffer from the pain you describe. It took me a long time to come to

terms with the fact that I had to be on pain relief. My doctors say, no one

has to endure this sort of pain. They could tell the pain I was in, my

blood pressure was up my pulse rate was high, I was crying all the time, my

tolerance went right down. I now take morphine twice a day, and even though

I never wanted to start taking them, I believe now in what they told me,

quality of life is so important. I do not have to suffer the pain just

because I have the disease. I was afraid that I would become addicted to

them, but my specialist explained to me that I would have to have an

addictive tendency and I don't and if I did I would want to up the dose all

the time. I am comfortable with the dose I am on and it really does get me

through the day comfortably. I am not advising just anyone to take this

road, but it was the only one for me. I get much needed relief now. That

gives me the opportunity to do things that I was finding I couldn't do.

Those doctors that say the liver can cause no pain, should walk a mile in

my shoes (without the meds). Believe me it is not in your head. I do hope

you are able to get relief soon.

Elena,

The pain is in the liver area, goes through to the back and sometimes

referred pain in the shoulder. I also have, on occasion, pain in the left

side of similar nature, they haven't been able to find any cause. It,

however, comes and goes and is not as intense and the right side.

There is, according to my specialist no specific reason, but the pain is

there. They say they have only come across a few cases with this sort of

continued pain. I am in the process of weaning of the pred. and hopefully

when that is done I can do the same with the pain meds.

No menstrual cycle, but I often get extremely hot. Do you think that could

be from the hormones or the AIH, I haven't delved into this, maybe I just

will let sleeping dogs lie.

Dear SueB:

I have almost constant pain in the upper abdomen, too. I just had an

endoscopy the other day and the only thing that he found was esophageal

reflux. He said that it could be part of the cause of the pain on the right,

but found nothing that explains the left side pain. I was so bummed that

nothing could be done for the pain. I don't take any pain meds right now

because I haven't found one that I can live with, but now I'm thinking I'm

going to have to find something that I can take on a regular basis and still

function.

As I recall, one of the medicines had hot flashes as a side effect. It

might have been prednisone or Imuran.

Dear Jody and Barbara:

I've had trouble with all of the opiates (codeine, morphine, vicoden,

darvocet, and percocet). Ironically, the one I can handle the best is the

percocet, even though it is the most powerful. All of them give me the same

problem. Whenever I rest or try to sleep while taking them, they cause

visual and sometimes physical (really nasty) hallucinations (they're usually

frightening). Codeine, morphine and percocet caused the visual effects and

vicoden and darvocet have given me the physical hallucinations. After the

last time I took vicoden, I vowed I would never take it again. It was

horrifying. I've taken the percocet on evenings when I was desperate about

the pain, but it makes me feel so groggy I can't function while taking it

during the day. My most recent try was with the pill form of Demerol. It

helped somewhat, but upset my stomach real bad. I'm going to keep trying

until I can find one that I can tolerate.

Hi Kathy,

I don't need to take pain med, but when I have had it in the hospital I had

the same problems. The morphine and vicoden were the worst. I don't know if

this can be used in liver disease, but my grandma takes something called

Vioxx. I guess it is kind of new, but she takes it for back pain from a

spinal compression fracture. Maybe you could ask about that. She takes one

per day.

not the only one who's suffered from hallucinations from those drugs.

ask your doctor what he thinks about Darvocet. its a very light weight

pain med and it helps me alot without getting to drugged out..

Hi Kathy,

The darvocet didn't do squat for me, and I'm usually

very sensitive to pain meds. I hope you have better

luck.

Kathy,

I had an endoscopy and it showed nothing. Yet the pain persists.

I can tell you I get through the days so much easier now with the pain

relief. I sometimes am able to pretend I am " normal " . Sleeping is still a

problem. I am only able to lie down for 4 to 5 hours then the pain gets

intense and I have to be up. It eases when I get up. Doctors say that the

liver spreads when laying down and that could make pain increase. Who

knows.

Hope you find some much needed relief soon.
