Re: antidepressants and liver

To Kathy and others on antidepressants. I had been on high doses of Zoloft

actually 300mg per day which is 1-1/2 times daily dose and did find out from

Mayo that this did not cause damage to my liver. I had permission to go off

3-4 weeks before appointment so we could make sure. I cycle with my

depression too. It was hard but at least I know that the Zoloft was not the

culprit. I did have to cut way back on the Zoloft though because my doctor

thought my liver wasn't metabolizing the drug as well and I was having some

extreme side effects-like hyperalertness and severe insomnia and when I did

sleep some really bizarre dreams and of course some nausea too. So now I'm

on 50mg working back up to 100 and checking liver enzymes as we go. My

SGOT,SGPT and GGTP seem to continously run 3 times normal so maybe that's

normal for me now! And nobody can explain that positive ANA of 1:320 and

1:640.

Dear Susie:

I never have taken antidepressants. There had been so much talk about them

recently that I did some research on them. It's good that the Zoloft didn't

contribute to your problem. Actually what it says about it in the RX is that

a compromised liver will not process it correctly. I thought it was

interesting. Paxil's RX said basically the same thing.

Dear Elena:

I was unable to copy and paste the section on the Liver, but here is the URL

for the RX info. It's 8 pages long, but there is a section on Liver and

Kidney on page 1. It basically says what Susie was talking about with the

Zoloft. A compromised liver or kidneys can cause the drug to be more

significantly more potent.

Hope this is helpful.

Hi Kathy

What do you mean by the liver will not process it

corretly? I am taking Paxil at the moment.

Thanks

Hi,

The strange thing that happened to me is that when I took lipitor, it

stopped my prozac from working!

Elena

I think if the liver has scarring etc. it can't metabolize as efficiently as

it used to and thus making the drug stay in the system longer etc than usual.

Thanks, I should be ok then, because as far as I know

I dont have scarring. (Hmmm, I have one on my arm from

my kitty, does that count?)
