I don't think you should allow the doc to kill her thyroid gland with RAI.

Many people never live normal lives after this procedure, mostly b/c it

doesn't address the problem. Her thyroid gland is reacting to other

hormones. She might actually NEED thyroid meds (thyroid gland can go hyper

before it burns out) or she needs OTC progesterone cream to help balance her

hormones. The only docs I know of who understand hormones are Broda

docs. Trust your instincts here.

You are so right to question this! My doctor rushed me into RAI for my

thyroid 3 years ago, and my quality of life has drastically suffered for

it. If I had the chance to do it all over again, I would definitely try

EVERY alternative before resorting to RAI.

This article gives some good information about people considering RAI.

I wish I would have read it before having the treatment done to me.

I have pretty strong opinions on this, because it turned out so badly

for me. However, I understand that some doctors feel that it makes

hyperthyroid a lot easier to treat. So, in the long run, it may be the

best decision for your daughter, but you definitely deserve to know what

you're getting into beforehand. I'll be glad to share my experiences

with you, but I sure don't want to alarm you or pressure you one way or

the other. I'm just glad to see that you're gathering more info before

making such a life-altering decision. Let me know if I can help in any

way.

---Thanks For the Info, I called off the RAI procedure this morning

and your emails confirmed my apprehension.

My Daughter has to take 3 pills a day at the moment. Does that seem

excessive . seems like there would be some time release pills that

would last all day. Any thoughts. mike

please get her the hormones she needs. Antithyroid drugs will only make her

situation worse. You must find a very smart doc. At age 12 she needs to

develop normally.

Thanks Gracia,

I will check on the hormones you mentioned. I pretty much am just

getting started in this thyroid treatment. I am beginning to feel

our present Doctor may not be the right one.

Personally I dont have a clue what methimazole is besides the fact

that it is used to treat hyperthyroidism. I found this site though

which seems quite informative:

You may be right that your current doctor is not the right one, it

takes most people a couple of tries to find the best one for them,

sometimes years.
