I've showed them to my doc and he is the one who thinks they may be caused by another autoimmune disorder. So he's run some tests and I'm going to go to see a dermatologist. I would like them to just be stretch marks! Let us know. So many funny things happen to the skin during Prednisone use. (One is odd, purple, wormy-looking growths on the face. Mine were on my eyelids, but they went away when the dose lowered.) I skimmed through my Palmer liver book looking for skin disorders and see that xanthomas are common in people with PBC. Also, check out this possibility: "Vasculitis -- inflammation of the blood vessels -- may present as a raised, purplish skin discoloration, known as purpura, which is most commonly located on the legs. This discoloration is due to leakage of blood under the skin." The book discusses vasculitis in the chapter on Hepatitis C, but I know other people also develop it. However, I think vasculitis is pretty common, so your doctor has probably already considered it. Harper (AIH 5/00)

Until you find your book, you might try the Palmer website, which contains some excerpts from the book. The address is liverdisease.com. She does not have another autoimmune disease, but I have Graves disease. I had hyperthyroidism, but now have hypo after tx. My hubby's cousin also has Graves disease and her daughter had pauci arthritis too. Interesting, is there links between thyroid disease and arthritis? I have heard that with having one autoimmune disorder your more likely to have another, but not sure of the exact study. > > It is very common. My son started with allergies, then asthma, then arthritis. All are auto immune in nature. According to my son's first rheumy, these kids have " hyper " immune systems which can cause this. Their immune systems are out of whack, if you will. Dealing with her hypothyroidism is fairly straightforward (I have adult onset hypothyroidism, which is treated with daily replacement hormone) but it concerns me that she has developed a second autoimmune disease. How many others have kids with multiple autoimmune diseases? Our new pediatric rheumatologist said this was fairly common, but we are a bit shaken nonetheless. Anyone else dealing with this? > > Christie > mom to Grace (7), Abby (5, poly JIA with uveitis and hypothyroidism) and Eliza (4 months) > > > > > >
