W...... there is tons of evidence that autoimmune diseases run in

families due to gene inheritance. I sent one page to the group and there

are many others that say the same thing. Hope this helps.

nne and -- the New York Times Science Section ran a long piece this summer (around July 4, I think) on the strong familial relationships in autoimmune disease. I certainly wasn't happy to hear it. I believe the article is available on-line through the NYT.

You might want to look at www.aarda.org You will find lots of info on

autoimmune diseases and research there. There is also information

about a study being conducted @ Hopkins on families and

autoimmune diseases. A lot of docs dont believe autoimmune runs in

families..but a lot do. You probably wont convince your doc

otherwise, but at least if you have the information, and your family

does, it can make some of those " mystery " ailments a lot easier to

identify by bringing the family history into the mix.

I had never heard of autoimmune ANYTHING until this summer when my 11

yr old was diagnosed with autoimmune thyroid. 2 months later I was

diagnosed with AIH. When I found AARDA and read some of the

information there..I was identifying other family members with things

that are most likely autoimmune in nature. But as the saying

goes...they dont see the forest for the trees....

Hope you find this source useful!

Hi Everyone,

Been away for a while.....mostly in hospitals....I have been lucky my liver has weathered the cancer...all gone now....and recently a heart attack. I guess my body is just stronger than me. I am starting to walk around and do things around the house, which is real nice. Once in a while I'll get a transfusion, but certainly doing much better. I always read the mail and know there are new members. Happy to see the site is still helping people...that's great.

Re the NYT (July?) 2000 article on autoimmune disease: I'm absolutely certain the article was in the NYT science section -- front page, bottom.

I'm NOT sure that it is in the on-line version, although I had thought it would be. I don't think I have kept a copy of the article -- I think it went in a recent clean-up. Basically, the article dealt with the growing recognition of the familial pattern in autoimmune diseases. I'll make an on-line search myself sometime this week. (My daughter, incidentally, has had very severe chronic fatigue syndrome for many years. This isn't technically an autoimmune disease, but there is a connection.)

nne, , and Harper,

I went to the NY site and searched under Autoimmune and Genetics and could only find an article from 1996. But the article you mentioned, I am not sure was published in NY Times. Harper, could you please check your resource -- Thanks. The 1996 article titled ""Virus Similarity to Body's Proteins may Explain Autoimmune Diseases" is quite interesting. For those interested check it out. Abstract is free but the article costs about $2.50
