Guest guest
Hi , I have lived with this disease for about 15 years now. It is possible. I have to tell you that every case is quite different. I have been fortunate to be able to be off most of my medications and I attribute much of that to lifestyle changes. Depending on the doctor, most will try to lower the prednisone while keeping the Imuran, IF the enzymes are normal.
Guest guest
, Welcome. I know you will find hope and a newfound knowledge from this group. I have had this disease for around 2 1/2 years now. ALT'S AND AST'S originally were in the 2000's. With the medication I am lucky to be classed as being in remission. I have had a flare-up (where the numbers go up for no apparent reason) but am getting back to normal now. I have the pain in the URQ all the time. Whether the counts are high or not. I know what you are saying about the way you feel when you are laying down. I am only able to lay for maximum of 5 hours before it gets to the stage that I have to get up and get the pressure of the liver off whatever it is resting against. Terrible feeling isn't it. You are lucky to be on a reasonably small dose of pred at this time. I hope all goes well with you and you wean off the pred really quickly and with no complications. Best of luck. Guest guest
Hi , Just wanted to reply to your E-mail and let you know that i too have the discomfort in the upper abdomen. Its so strange, I cant work out what it is. I got my labs done and my enzymes are still normal. However, i have this discomfort on my right side just beneath my rib cage and hurts on pressure. Its more of a dull ache as if I have been kicked in the side. More noticiable is the tenderness in the centre just beneath the triangle of the rib cage. I went to the doctor about this and he is stumped. He suggested liver inflammation even though my enzymes are normal. Does anyone know if it is possible to have liver inflammation with low LFT's? Anyway, Im going to have an ultrasound and hopefully that will give me some answers. Last time i had an ultrasound all it showed was sludge in my gall bladder. I hope you are well Take care Elena --- <williamc@...> wrote: > From: <williamc@...> > > All, > > I have to say.. what a wonderful place to voice my > concerns about my malady. > I never knew this existed until recently, and I > thank whoever set it up. Guest guest
Hi, I have the same upper right quadrant pain and my LFTs have been eleveted and also normal at times. But the one constant has been the sedimentation rate also called Sed Rate or ESR. I have noticed that when the liver hurts the most my sed rate is in the upper 50s or low 60s. Sed rates determine an inflammation in the body. Unfortunately it doesnt say for sure if its coming from the liver or joint pains. But over the last year I have noticed that my joints feel pretty good (for my joints) and yet my sed rate is 65 an all time high for me. Im convinced its my liver causing this elevation. I wont get confirmation til I see the liver doc in a week. Thats my therory as Ive done my own research on my health. Some doctors seem to watch the sed rates closely others dont give it much importances.. Guest guest
Hi Jody, Thanks for the reply. Thats something i havent thought of. I will look into the sed rate next time i get my labs. Are you saying that you had liver tenderness even when your enzymes were normal? Both LFT's are really low, my SGOT is only 15. Elena Oh by the way, I have a funny one for you all! when I told my doctor about the discomfort he was not only stumped but also convinced that im a hypochondriac with all this in my head. So he said that im probably having the pain because im aware i have AIH and im clenching my stomach muscles over my liver area to protect it!.....Huh?! --- AGo2864215@... wrote: > From: AGo2864215@... > > Elena, > > Me too on all the abdominal discomfort! > > Anita g. > > ---------------------------
Guest guest
Just came across this page on the web about smooth muscle antibodies. It interested me as i have a titer of 1:180 and thought it was positive in just AIH. However this is also saying SLE and PBC. Did anybody know that already? I thought people with PBC tested negative for Smooth muscle.....Hmmmmm Screening titre: 1:20 Introduction Auto-immune diseases are caused by a disorder of the cellular and/or humoral immunological reaction. These reactions which normally occur against external influences may under certain circumstances turn against the body itself and thereby cause various diseases. ASMA Antibodies to smooth, unstriated muscle occurs in various liver diseases, for example acute and chronic hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, and other forms of liver cirrhosis. Furthermore, the detection of ASMA supports the diagnosis of SLE, infectious mononucleosis, breast and ovarian carcinoma, and malignant melanomas. APCA Circulating antibodies against the structures of the parietal cell of the gastric mucosa are generally due to pernicious anemia. They may, however, also be detected with other diseases of the stomach (chronic atrophic gastritis, gastric ulcer), diseases of the thyroid (Hashimoto's thyroiditis, myxedema), and more rarely with hypoferric anemia, diabetes mellitus, and in older patients. Assessment The determination is performed using tissue sections of rat stomach. A serum is considered positive if a green fluorescence of specific cell structures of the tissue sections is visible. The tissue section of rat stomach allows the differentiation between various antibodies within one test area and may thus be applied as a diagnostic test for the following autoimmune antibodies. (In case of diverse antibodies it is advisable to look for further diagnostic identification.) Antibodies to smooth muscle (ASMA): Indication of the presence of ASMA is given by a fluorescence of the smooth muscle fibres of the blood vessels of kidney and stomach, of muscularis mucosa, tunica muscularis ventriculi, as well as the inter-glandular contractile fibrillae of the stomach mucosa. Antibodies to parietal cells (APCA): Finely granular fluorescence of the parietal cells in the gastric mucous membrane indicate APCA. Note: Since AMA may also react with parietal cells, anti-mitochondrial antibodies (with renal tubules) should be excluded in the APCA assessment. === Elena AIH San Diego, CA
Guest guest
Elena, Well.. my enzyme have always hovered around 200+ for about 10 years.. until a doctor finally understood what was going on.. so.. the last time I had blood drawn was about 5 months ago.. and they were down about 40% after three months of therapy with Prenizone and Imuran.. so.. I'm hoping that with this checkup.. I will be around normal, or under twice normal.. crossing my fingers.. The discomfort is in the upper right quad.. right at the base of my rib cage.. it feels like I know where my liver is... Re: [ ] Autoimmune Hepatitis Checkup From: Elena P <brit71@...> Welcome to the " Ab " club. Are your enzymes normal, and where abouts is the discomfort? Elena Oh by the way, I have a funny one for you all! when I told my doctor about the discomfort he was not only stumped but also convinced that im a hypochondriac with all this in my head. So he said that im probably having the pain because im aware i have AIH and im clenching my stomach muscles over my liver area to protect it!.....Huh?! --- AGo2864215@... wrote: > From: AGo2864215@... > > Elena, > > Me too on all the abdominal discomfort! > > Anita g. > > ---------------------------

Guest guest
I have been reading a ton of info regarding the smooth muscle SMA and the mitochondrial ab or AMA. It says that people with a pos AMA and SMA are the ones with PSC, and that ones with neg AMA and SMA but have a Pos ANA antinuclear ab ANA are the ones with autoimmune cholangitis. Now at the moment I dont remember what it says about the AIH. I will read more and post it here when I find it.. Guest guest
Hi Like yourself, I've only been diagnosed in the last several months. I'm now on 25mg Pred (and dropping), and 50mg Imuran. My treatment plans also include aiming to get off the Pred (YAY)! I haven't had too many side effects either. Joint and muscle pain for the first month. I also have " bad " days, where I'm depressed, tired, achy, and irritable ...fun. But, those are becoming less frequent. Oh yes, and acne. But, I'll take these to some of the other! I also had an appointment yesterday. My doctor said we will try to taper off pred and see how that goes, though she said some people have a hard time of this. I'm assuming that means my levels may go up again..? Then, I will be on Imuran (azathioprine) for 2 years. At this time, if my levels are ok, I'll try going med free and see how it goes. If I relapse (bad word), then she said I will be on pred and imuran for life. SCARY STUFF. She also seems to think I will relapse, because according to her 80% of people with AIH relapse. Anyways, sorry I'm not one of the long term experts...I just wanted to say " hi " because our situations seem very similar right now.... Happy to meet you!! >From: <williamc@...> >Reply- onelist > " ' onelist' " < onelist> >Subject: [ ] Autoimmune Hepatitis Checkup >Date: Mon, 26 Jul 1999 16:59:08 -0700 > >From: <williamc@...> > >All, > >I have to say.. what a wonderful place to voice my concerns about my >malady. >I never knew this existed until recently, and I thank whoever set it up. >On >to my question, I have a routine checkup for my Autoimmune Hepatitis this >Wednesday. Guest guest
Hi everyone, This is hilarious!!..but not really. I just had an appointment yesterday, and I asked the doctor about my liver and kidney aches and pains. She asked me how I knew they were my liver and kidney hurting. When I showed her where they were, and explained myself, she dismissed it and said that since my levels are ALT 50 and AST 88 there should be no discomfort. She said it's probably muscle pain. Here's a big " WHATEVER " !! >From: Jody Compton <intrigued1@...> >Reply- onelist > onelist, onelist >Subject: Re: [ ] Autoimmune Hepatitis Checkup >Date: Wed, 28 Jul 1999 07:25:06 -0700 (PDT) > >From: Jody Compton <intrigued1@...> > >I had the same sort of thing happen. Guest guest
Hi Kathy, You know what I think is the craziest thing about the reactions of these doctors? They treat us like hypochondriacs, yet we have been diagnosed with AIH. We HAVE an illness. On top of this, it's a rare illness, which means the medical field is still in the process of learning. It angers me when they don't take notes on my symptoms. Ah well...we know better, don't we? I wish we all didn't have these discomforts, but it is reassuring to know others experience them as well...especially after a doctor's appointment!!! Have fun dreams Kathy.... >From: KATBERCOO@... >Reply- onelist > onelist >Subject: Re: [ ] Autoimmune Hepatitis Checkup >Date: Thu, 29 Jul 1999 01:17:35 EDT > >From: KATBERCOO@... > >Dear : > >I can't tell you how many times I've been told the same thing! Guest guest
I have been really busy the last few days, but have been trying to keep up with the mail. I was interested to know if anyone does keep a journal of their aches and pains and symptoms and thoughts etc. If we all did this daily or whenever something occurs, this may help people in the future. It would give all these Drs. that really have know idea of them some help. Could be a really neat thing. What do ya'all think? Lynn in Wa.
