Guest guest
I was told I had Sheehan's Syndrome (Hypothyroidism) in " 98. My baby was born and I almost bled to death. They tell me my thyroid died completely at that time. I've been to everyone everywhere but feel so alone. I stumbled on to this site by accident and read just one message and couldn't believe there are others like me. God bless you all. Listen I have one question. Is it possible to lose weight with this condition? I have gained 20 pounds since 98 and that is with exercising 5 days a week and watching my diet. All of my Doctors tell me to forget it, they won't even discuss weight loss but I have vowed to beat them to no avail. I work out two hours a day and have eat brown rice, boiled chicken, stay away from caffeine, don't smoke don't drink. I don't go up but others with me have lost 10 to 20 pounds working out with me. I am considering cosmetic surgery as I just keep going up. Is there anyone out there that has found the secret to losing weight with hypo? I have tried tonalins CLA for a year and every other diet aid. Anything anyone can tell me will be greatly appreciated. Were any one of you able to do it? Thank you all. Guest guest
How have you've been treated? any adrenal drugs especially with this syndrome-- surgery could be very dangerous with any hypo problem--I would not do it---too risky!! I had just knee surgery and it took two months to heal---and I was in bed two months---fyi---surgery is not easy for the hypo person!!!! If you get on the correct meds you can lose weight but it's not easy to get balanced and then try and reduce calories based on the body's burning mechanism--have to take it slowly and be careful not to throw yourself off again. best bet is to get your glands regulated and then try and lose weight in conjunction with proper nutrients needed for the hypo patient!! with lots of rest and some exercise---anything in extreme can throw off the delicate balance neccessary for body functions. go back and read as many posts as you can--it will help!!!! we are always happy to have new people!!! tina > I was told I had Sheehan's Syndrome (Hypothyroidism) in " 98. Guest guest
Hi & Welcome! Sorry about what you've been through...you're in good company here! Sure, it's possible to lose weight with hypothyroidism. Your body is gonna have to start working better though. Maybe you're just not taking a thyroid medicine that works well for you. What kind do you take? Or it could be you're not getting enough of that particular medication. Or maybe you have some other things going on. I can tell you that for the 7 years prior to when I was diagnosed, I played tennis about 3 hours a day...at least 5 days a week. And I danced. My diet was good. I wasn't starving myself or anything...eating enough and eating healthy...pretty much the same like I do now. anyway, none of that exercise made me lose weight. My weight just wouldn't budge. I hate to think how much I would've gain had I not exercised that much. Anyway, about 2 months before I was diagnosed I picked up about 10 pounds. As soon as I started on thyroid meds, I lost the weight I needed (30 pounds). The 30 pounds came off in 4 months. How much weight do you need to lose? i would recommend you see a dietician to help you find a diet that's right for you. I've been seeing a dietician on and off for over 10 years. Like tina, I recommend you read the archives to learn more...and keep asking questions. When I joined this group, I read every single archive...it really educated me a lot about this disease. I know it sounds overwhelming, but you can read a little at a time. The more you learn about this disease the better you will feel! Guest guest
Hi Sheila, How much Cortisone are you taking every day? I have one acquaintance who took it and never gained an ounce; however, a co-worker who took it ballooned up. I don't know a lot about this particular medication, but some of the others here do. What dosage of it do you take? What other medical problems do you have besides hypothyroidism? Are you still having other symptoms of hypoT besides the issues with weight? When you talk to the dietician you see, make sure you tell her everything that's going on with you...medications you take, medical problems you have, inability to lose weight. She will ask you what your diet is like now, what your food preferences are, if you have any religious/cultural issues (I did) regarding food, if you have any allergies, etc. I know that sometimes doctors aren't too sensitive about the symptoms (weight gain included) we deal with from this disease, but you deserve to feel as optimal health-wise as you can. Have you considered maybe trying another thyroid medication? My mom was taking Synthroid and had a lot of problems with it, including a little weight gain. She is going to switch to Armour, which is what I take. I lost the weight, however, after they started me on Levoxyl. Everybody's different, and everybody's body reacts differently to medication. Glad to hear you're not giving up hope!!! Take care and keep in touch, Sheila (P.S. Kemal is my hubby. My name is also Sheila. sheila lockhart <blessed2do@...> wrote: Thank you so much for writing Kemal. You have shown me today that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Guest guest
Yes, it is possible to lose weight - but you need to have your thyroid in the optimal range, where you have no other symptoms, and even then it is slower than for " normal " people. But I lost 111lb I gained with untreated hypo, so it is possible if you have a good doctor to get you healthy and if you are patient. Jan I can't belive I've found others like me. God bless you all.
