Guest guest
Being hypothyroid does not mean that you will automatically develop a weight problem. I know several who are not overweight, myself included. I am 5' 1 and 117 pounds. During the time before my diagnosis I was actually losing weight. I had lost about 22 pounds in four months without trying, which alerted my dr that something was going on. Because my TSH test came back normal he did nothing at the time. He attributed my condition to stress following a difficult divorce. After seeking a second opinion, I took a reverse T3 and a free T4 test. Reverse T3 was non measurable, so this dr put me on a low dose of Armour. I stayed on Armour for a time, but eventually switched to Synthroid, and many things have improved greatly for me. I still have some issues with hair loss and edema, and dry skin, but nothing like I was when this all started. I don't believe that weight gain is inevitable with this condition. I think the tendency to gain weight is directly related to our energy levels, and this is definitely a factor with hypothyroidism. With proper medication that can definitely be turned around. Guest guest
Thank You!! I have a friend that is HypoT and she looks at me like, " You are not heavy enough to be HypoT!! " Well, sorry, but I am! I might not look heavy to some people, but I have gained 25 lbs. Just because I was always very thin, I'm 5'5 " and used to be 110 lbs. in my 20's and 125 lbs. in my 30's. Then in my later 30's to 40's I gained up to 150 lbs. Since being on Synthroid I have dropped 10 lbs. but that is all. Gee, I NEVER tell anyone my weight, not even my sister or husband! LOL I think my symptoms are more of fatigued, brain fog, aches and pains, and some weight gain. Where as others might have more weight gain and less of the other symptoms, am I correct? Guest guest
Underweight is an adrenal symptom. He should be on low dose cortisol, which MIGHT eliminate his need for thyroid meds. Lots of adrenal info has been posted here. Gracia > > > > I have gone through hundreds of articles on hypothyroidism. Nearly > all of them suggest to loose the weight. Guest guest
If you friend is losing weight then he may have adrenal fatigue underlying to the Hypo problem. This happened to me. I was getting plenty of thyroid medication but still tired. I started losing a lot of weight and had nausea all the time. I had severe muscle weakness too. Suggest that he have his adrenals checked. >From: " tprabhat1234 " <prabhat.tandon@...> >Reply-hypothyroidism >hypothyroidism >Subject: Is underweight or weightloss a symptom of >Hypothyroidism >Date: Mon, 06 Dec 2004 09:09:10 -0000 >MIME-Version: 1.0 >X-Originating-IP: 202.54.51.5 >X-Sender: prabhat.tandon@... >Received: from n16a.bulk.scd.
