Hi Sue,

You should change over to Everson. At least they will point you in the right

direction to other doctors only as I am finding you have to be very assertive

towards them. Seems like all liver specialist doctors have NO! personality.

And what I know Pred. can effect your vision blurrieness, also cause you to

have hearing problems. I have not heard about the doctors you mentioned. The

only thing I know is University of what my other transplant friend and I call

the hotel. Keep us informed.

Have you gone to University in the past? If not you will probably need to get

a referral from your Primary doc. Or if you live in Jefferson County you may

be able to just call and go in. I get so frustrated with all the doctors I go

to. One treats this but won't even discuss another problem you may have. I

have noticed all the docs I have to go to are quick to refer. Yet when it

comes to treating the liver and forever thereafter. Any other doctor has to

ask permission of Liver docs what a pain. I do know that Transplant will

treat and monitor your blood levels closely. So this will help your anemia.

So make your appointment.

I think you are correct.

Remember Gayle a while ago I was thinking of going to Everson? Well,

it's probably time. I need a doctor that can treat both AIH and

anemia.

Yes, there is really nothing 'rocket science' about treating anemia,

but I can't tell if I'm overloading in the iron storage. That is

where the damage occurrs. I CAN tell when I'm getting anemic only.

It appears that this cycle is happening every 2-3 months. I'm fine

for a couple of months then WHAM that third month is hard.

So, I'll give Everson a try.

Any suggestions on switching doctors? When and how do I do this? I

have an upcoming appointment at the end of December with my current

doctor.

Be glad you have insurance. I did get the slap in the face today. I was

supposed to be scheduled to have a chest xray, bloodgasses, lung function

tests, echocardiogram. I call the clinic to be told that they have cut me off

except for only liver related problems. I have to go to Denver General for

all my other problems and I am feeling really nervous as they are the reason

I had to have a transplant in the first place. Oh well I will be seeing a

whole lot of their emergency rooms because I can never seem to get any care

from my PCP. Now my legs are swelling so here goes Death General. You will

get the best treatment because you have insurance. I envy you.

I am so sorry. I was just told this afternoon that my discount program is

going under something I don't want to hear. I don't know the other ones you

have listed. Even with insurance your still screwed. I feel like I have been

set out in the middle of a sea alone and I can't swim I am at a panic without

the greatness of University.

My insurance doesn't require a referral. I have United Healthcare

PPO. I just make the appointment. Thank goodness I don't have to

jump through those hoops!

I am very frustrated. They say to 'take charge of your health care',

but when you do and think your skating along just fine - they rip your

skates off and slap your hand for doing that. <sigh>

I'm going to call Everson this afternoon.

Well Gayle;

I can't go to Dr. Everson. He is not listed in my provider list with

United Healthcare. I'm really sad about this.

The other doctors I've listed before are on the provider list, but I

don't know who these drs. are and no one else has replied that is from

Denver but you.

Sue, my wife uses Dr. Trotter is also a hepitologist at

University Hospital in Denver. He is a member of the same group that Dr.

Everson heads up at the transplant center. I cannot believe that United

Health Care will deny you access to this stellar group who are by all means

the premier liver disease doctors in the Rockies. They treat patients not

only from Colorado but also New Mexico and Wyoming who do not have transplant

centers. My wife is not a candidate for a transplant (due to her age) but we

have been impressed by the care and attention we have received from this

group.

Sorry, I just saw that I was typing your name wrong. I am sorry.

Yes you are right. I am lucky to have insurance. I do count my lucky

stars on that one. However, I must continue working to keep my

insurance! And keeping working seems to be difficult lately.

My husband does have insurance, but you know they will try anything not

to have me under their policy. Even with the state and federal laws. I

have to be careful.

I heard from a friend at work that his son-in-law was in Denver General

last week. He was in a bad car accident (totaled his new car) up north

(Thornton), he was transported by ambulance to Denver General and had 20

some stitches on the front of his head and about 10 on the back of his

head. His arm was too swollen for examination/xrays and they think he

broke his arm in the wreck. HOWEVER, with all that, they released him

about 1 AM (yes in the morning) and said they couldn't do anything for

him.

I share your concern on DG. I've told everyone NEVER to take me to DG.

Galye - why did they 'shut you off' on the other testing?

I don't know about getting the best treatment. It's hard to get these

doctors to coordinate with each other. I suppose I could go back to my

general physician and have him test me about every other month on the

anemia. But, what a pain and more expense on both me and the insurance

company!

Because I don't live in the Jefferson County line. The only way I can go to

University is if they don't have the same doctors or division. I have to go

to University because they are the only hospital to do transplants. Same with

Lung transplant. I was told that because of being on the discount and no

insurance program I have to go back to Denver Death to now get a referral to

order these tests and to be able to go back to University. This is the first

time in my life that because I have no money or insurance I am really scared

because I have already had the experience of being turned away. According to

Transplant I am considered a priority patient which means I am supposed to

get care before any one else. And I have to go to Emergency. What happens

when they turn me away? Anyway? I don't want to die. I am even wondering if I

should get a lawyer. Denver Death sent me away from ER 3 times 3 days in a

row. I was in complete liver failure they never ran any test at all. They saw

it in my blood levels that were running into the 2000s. They told me to go to

see my regular doc if I didn't feel better in a few days. I was dying

literally. My family took me to University the 4th day and they were shocked

I was not admitted. So today I am very scared. I have some massive leg

swelling going on and transplant told me to go to Denver Death.

Hi Chuck;

Can you believe this - I went to United Healthcare's web site ( www.

unitedhealthcare.com ) to look up Dr. Trotter's name in the provider's

list and ... nope ... he is not listed either!

I have the 'best' plan on United - the Options PPO (High) which means

check the list to see if they are a participant.

The only other option is to use the 'traditional' aspect of this

insurance which puts me at the 70/30% and I have to pay first then

submit a claim. I just can't afford that!

I can't believe that United Health Care didn't pick up these doctors!

Okay, play there game for 30 minutes. Go to DG. Let them turn you

away. Then say .... 'if you don't get me a referral to University,

then I need your name and position in this hospital for my lawyers just

in case something happens.'

I had to do that when living in Dallas with Kaiser. I was having the

same symptoms of a tubal pregnancy (I had a ectopic pregnancy burst one

of my tubes previously). I called Kaiser according to their process.

Talked to a nurse. She said there was no problem and just to ignore

it. If I still didn't feel well in a couple of days then call back.

This was there 'canned' answer to most people. I told her that she

would be liable if I worsened and possibly died. I got in right away.

I don't think there is a single person on this list serve that wants to

die. We are all trying to 'do the right thing'. But the darn doctors

keep on throwing us off track, or ignoring serious problems 'because

it's not their field or problem'.

The massive leg swelling is (I think) edema. But didn't I see earlier

in this list that it could be something associated with the heart? To

help out, try to lay down with your legs elevated. This is what they

tell you when your pregnant and have swelling. This is NOT the end

answer. It still needs to be looked at by the doctor. Circulation to

your feet can be cutoff by the swelling. Watch the color of your lower

legs (blue).

Obviously I can't sleep tonight, so I'm up writing. Snow is pretty

outside, have you peeked out the window lately?

Take care and let me know how things turn out. Remember, you are in

charge of your health (so they tell us). Demand the referral, get

names.

You might call your insurance company rather than depending on what's

on the website. It could be out of date. Also, in some cases, a

university hospitals' doctors are included as a group. That's how it

is with my insurance. The particular doctors at the UW aren't listed

on my plan, but my Primary Care Physician got me a out-of-network specialty

Isn't Pacificare an HMO? Under United Healthcare, what I have is a PPO.

That's where I don't need a referral to any doctor. I just need to

make sure the doctor has a 'contract' with the insurance company - in

other words, on their provider list.

Hi Cyndi;

The only difference between HMO and PPO is how much 'control' the

insurance company has over the doctor selection.

Both offer doctors - but the HMO limits you to the PCP " Gatekeeper "

their theory is the amount of doctor visits will be less. But with our

situation (AIH) and the seriousness of the disease, I can't see any

savings the insurance company would have under a HMO.

The PPO road is similar to HMO with just about all other insurance

companies except United Healthcare. They are the 'renegades of the

insurance industry' in offering no 'interference' between you and your

doctor. I think that was incredible when they did that. It relieved a

great deal of stress off the patient, doctor and administrators so they

can get down to business rather than trying to jump hoops constantly.

Think in reverse psychology - the patient feels that he/she can receive

treatment from the doctor without worry about the insurance company

hoops, referrals, etc (except for coverage issues of course) - thus the

patient is in a 'better frame of mind' thus 'positive thinking' thus

'natural biofeedback'. I hope other insurance companies take note and

follow suit.

Hi Cyndi;

That is a pretty neat web site. I have seen Hesky (who is on the list)

just last Thursday. He told me to see Dr. Ken Weiner (who is on the

list) for treatment of AIH, and that Hesky thought Weiner would be

willing to help with the anemia.

How odd though that Everson or Trotter are not on the list. I have

heard from other sources in Nebraska that Everson is an excellent

doctor. Of course, Trotter also said on this list as an excellent

doctor as well.

Hesky did an iron study just last week and my iron it is still out of

whack. I'm waiting to hear from him. But because of the holiday, it

may be next week.

Looks like we are going to have beautiful weather this holiday!
