Guest guest
Leona, I read your post from the beginning of the month and you mentioned that you had taken your last 2.5mgs of prednisone. How did your labs come out? I am on the last week of 2.5mgs and will go off next week completely. I will be on 50mgs of azathioprine forever the doc says. Hope you were able to get off the pred. How are you feeling? Roxanne
Guest guest
Roxanne; I have been off pred. since 5/5th. The Dr. had labs done 4/27th & today & they are in normal range. I am on 100mg of azathioprine, he increased it from 50 when I started reducing pred. I am beginning to feel better this wk but my feet are still swelling. I was very fatigued but that is improved. I have been treated by a podiatrist since Dec. for plantar fascia & heel spur which has been more painful w/o pred so I dont know how that will go. I do not want surgery,he said it would take about a yr to be fully healed. My internist recommended I wait yet. I do have orthotics for my shoes. I have not lost wt yet.:-( The internist wants me to go on a low sodium diet ,ride the bike & do stretches for the achilles tendon & will see me in July. She does'nt want to have to give me more med. if that will help. I am stiff & sore but that is getting a little better. Makes me think i've developed arthritis and the pred was covering the discomfort. My mother had rheum arthritis very bad for 30 yrs before she died & my sister 6yr younger than I has MS & confined the wheel chair & dependent on her husband. So I feel guilty when I groan & moan. I hope you do well when you get free of the pred. I was on & off short term pred. from 1990 until 1997 when I finally consented to the biopsy. Since then I have been on it till now. In that span of time one wonders what is from aging & what is from meds & AIH. Well I wish you the best & will ck on you later. We are leaving tomorrow for Neb. for a mo. to visit families. Guest guest
Hi Roxanne; In response to your May post I havent felt well since about the 4th wk after my last prednisone. Fatigue set in, very achy, fluid retention & slight nausea. My labs 7/6 shows an increase of the alt(gpt) from 23 to 128. This wk labs were repeated & both alt & ast were up so they are scheduling me for my 3rd biopsy.:-(. Most likely i will have to go back to pred.:_(. I am on 100mg azathioprine so maybe it can be reduced back to 50 if i have to take pred. again. Did you go off pred.successfully or is it not resolved yet? There has been so much e-mail lately I get confused on who is doing what or why. Must be a Sr. moment or brain fog! Take care. Guest guest
Leona, I have gotten off prednisone. I'm on 50mgs of azathioprine (Imuran). It's still early to say whether my body can tolerate being off the prednisone or not. It's been only 6 weeks. But so far I feel pretty good. I'm going to bed about 11:00p.m. and getting up about 7:00a.m. and then take about an hour nap during the day. I don't think this is too excessive. Do you? I hope you can stay off the prednisone. Have you been weaned off more than once and had to go back on? I'm sure that can be discouraging. Hang in there and let me know what comes of your labs. Guest guest
---------- >Leona, My liver specialist told me that too, about the law saying they have to keep the liver biopsy. But maybe you can tell me, if the enzymes are above normal for some time, taking medication is bringing them down extremely slowly, then with the enzymes being like that for so long, will that not do more damage to the liver? Hence if they use the same biopsy they will not be able to give an accurate assessment on the condition of the liver NOW. I have wondered this, because my numbers have been abnormal for so very long now and the symptoms persist. Should they do regular biopsies or just rely on the original? Just though someone might have a thought on that. SueB.
Guest guest
Hi Leona, I am fairly new to this group myself. It is wonderful hearing about your new baby! I am 33 years old, and desperately wanted to have another child, but since being diagnosed with AIH, I am quite scared. I am on Imuran 50mg, and recently tapered down to prednisone 17.5 mg. My LFT's came back normal for the first time since October, but they were never as high as yours. (the highest was ALT 172 and AST 167) My doctor believes that we caught the AIH early. THANK GOD!!! Anyway...best wishes for you and your little girl and welcome back! Sincerely, Pam in CT
Guest guest
Hi Leona: It's very nice talking to you and please don't worry about not sending us a card, it's the thought that counts. Debbie/Fl gave away my secret, I do have to write names down and something about them to help me remember who I'm talking to. There are so many more people in the group now you just can't keep tract even without AIH. LOL I see you go to Mayo but where do you live? Also if you don't mind telling me your age. I will be 48 August 30, and Jodi is 28. I know the Pred. can really cause problems with your eyesight, in Melbourne can tell you all about that. As far as the flare ups with 5 mg of Pred. I can also understand that. Jodi never got that low until right before the living transplant was done. Of course you have to remember she was not responding to the medications anyway. The doctors tell us there are about 10% of the people with AIH that won't. I would ask my doctor about staying at maybe a little higher dosage for longer periods of time before trying to lower them to 5 mg. My mother has ITP and her Oncologist was decreasing her Prednisone to quickly and then having to increase it again. She was on a roller coaster and feeling awful. I suggested she get a second opinion and she was sent to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa and they told her that was the problem. Just a suggestion, I am in no way trying to tell your doctors what to do. You must be a proud Mama to have a son that finished dental school. I'll have to keep that in mind if I ever move to California. I tease Patty O'Brien that lives in California that I want her to adopt me but on the other hand if she did I wouldn't have to work. LOL Better shut up for now and stir up some supper. I better enjoy this cause when I go back to work I won't be able to stay on the computer so much. Take care and have a good week. Guest guest
Leona: SO good to hear from you!!! Your progress is superb and Bernadette too. Yes, after I get back from vacation,(Jan 6th) I am going to hit it hard at the gym and really log my caloric intake in a diary and THEN see if I need another fill. I don't think that I am " fighting " the band but, maybe I am. I really don't know. I am amazed that when I DO eat....I can get in more than I think I can. I don't most times but sometimes I do. Last night for New Years I ate a fabulous New York steak that was a cred card size. When I looked at it, it seemed like a lot but then I ate a salad, stir fried veggies and spaggetti squash with it. It ALL fit!!! How can that be? I don't eat that much at home when not on vacation and I am still not losing. So it's time to stand back and take another long analytical look at my eating and excersize. Thanks for checking in and keep in touch! My mother says hello to you and she is amazed at both of your progress too....remember she was with me in Mexicali?
