I had mono my sophomore year in high school and it took me about five months to get over it. I had a friend who also had it during that time (huge outbreak of mono that year, like 90% of the school got it) and her spleen grew so inlarged they put her on high doses of steriods and were considering removing her spleen, but she ended up being fine. It takes a long time to get over it, so tell him to take it easy and not to start pushing himself when he starts feeling a little better.

Yeah they kept me on the meds.. but for some reason I cant remember what I was on... lol that a long time ago.. almost 6 years.. lol..But I do know they kept me on my meds..

It is infectious mononucleosis, or the " kissing disease " . It is most

common among people 15 to 24. It comes from close contact with someone's

saliva (i.e. kissing, drinking from an infected person's glass, using

utensils from someone who has it, etc.). It makes you very tired for a

long time, very sore throat, and fevers. It can take weeks or months to

fully recover. If you have an immune system problem, the longer it could

take to recover. It can cause problems with the spleen (rarely) so you

must avoid contact sports and working strenuously. There was also some

mention of the liver on webmd. There is no medicine for it, as

antibiotics make symptoms worse. Tylenol wasn't helping, but he started

some Aleve last night, and he felt a bit better. The problem is

naprosyn, ibuprofen and drugs like that hurt his stomach after awhile. I

may need to get him some of his Celebrex again if the pain keeps up.

Thanks, . That is what I was looking

for. Did you keep taking your arthritis meds at the time? If so, what did you

take? This is just a bad time, with him starting college in 3 weeks. I

guess it is a good thing he is staying home instead of going away to school. I

could not see him being far and trying to deal with this. I will pass along the

info – definitely better from a peer than from mom! Thanks again, Michele
