Guest guest
, I think that I was told that people with liver disease are especially vulnerable to infections in the mouth. In fact, I was warned about using dental floss or those little rubber picks for teeth cleaning. Even a very small break in the gums can cause infection. I'm seeing my dentist next week and fortunately the dentist I'm seeing (and the clinic where he practices) is informed about autoimmune diseases and the effects of immunosuppressants. They've given me an antibiotic prescription that I start taking the day I go in to have my teeth cleaned and continue to take until I've finished the bottle. Purely preventative. Also, I think that Sjogren's syndrome can show up in your gums. A friend of mine who has Lupus has very serious Sjogren's and she's had to have thousands of dollars worth of dental care because of it. Since Sjogren's is another autoimmune disease and seems to go with AIH frequently, it might be good to be tested for it. It requires a specific test and I'm going to have it done myself. I also have developed a deep red line at the base of my gums and I think that it might be caused by Sjogren's, since I have some other symptoms too. It's not that any of these things might apply to what's going on with you, but it's always good to rule out possibilities. Take care, Geri
Guest guest
Hi - Nope you're not alone on this one either. I used to have the perfect set of pearly whites until I got AIH. Slowly I started having problems with my teeth (I thought maybe it was bone loss from the meds). My teeth started cracking off. In May of 98 I started getting swollen, tender gums. Turned out I had severe periodontal disease, which, according to my dentist, was unusal for a person of such young age, but was common amongst liver patients. You have to remember because of the meds we have suppressed immune systems and it's kinda hard to kill those bacteria. In either event, here I am a year and a half later, after having eight teeth pulled, root planing on the remaining teeth on my upper and lower jaw and a bit of reconstructive surgery (severe bone loss), I am now wearing a partial and was able to keep most of my teeth. I lost most of my molars on the top and bottom, but luckily, I had a fantastic dentist (head of the School of Dentistry and Oral Surgery at the Univeristy of Michigan), who was able to save most of my teeth and I now still have a beautiful smile : ) Please don't wait to have it checked out. Remember any type of infection can be extremely detrimental. Good Luck. Guest guest
Dear Geri, Thanks for sharing your knowledge! I'll definitely look into the Sjogren's and see if it's a possibility. Is there anything liver disease spares?!?! It seems we're more prone to everything! >From: Geri Spang <spangs@...> >Reply- onelist > onelist >Subject: Re: [ ] Gum problems? >Date: Sat, 29 May 1999 15:14:35 -0700 > >From: Geri Spang <spangs@...> > >, >I think that I was told that people with liver disease are especially >vulnerable to infections in the mouth. Guest guest
Dear Debbie, I feel so badly you ran into so many problems with your teeth and gums. I'll definitely get mine checked out soon. In all the reading I've done on AIH, they neglect to mention so many of the symptoms and side effects that I've read about on this site. I think one of us should write a book collected from everyone who posts here... Thanks again Debbie. I appreciate the warning. >From: " Debbie " <debbie1m@...> >Reply- onelist >< onelist> >Subject: Re: [ ] Gum problems? >Date: Sat, 29 May 1999 23:45:07 -0400 > >From: " Debbie " <debbie1m@...> > >Hi - > >Nope you're not alone on this one either. Guest guest
, I have the impression that Sjogren's is a fairly common autoimmune disease but at least it's not really dangerous except possibly by rare exception. I guess one the autoimmune process starts our bodies go into total anarchy and no telling what will happen next. I'd say it would be good to rule out Sjogren's just to be safe. It's no big deal to be tested for it and then you know what if anything you are battling. Take care, Geri
Guest guest
I do. Mine are always sore. I thought maybe i was going crazy or something. Did you take prednisone? I think that maybe that has something to do with it. >From: " emily simpson " <esimpson7@...> >Reply- onelist > onelist >Subject: [ ] Gum problems? >Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 21:22:12 PDT > >From: " emily simpson " <esimpson7@...> > >Hi everyone, > >Since you are all a wealth of knowledge on AIH (my best source!!!), I >thought I'd ask this seemingly bizarre question. Guest guest
, No, I haven't been on Prednisone yet. When I was talking to my dentist, he said gum problems often stem from a change in one's diet, or poor nutrition. Put with what my doctor said about my liver not being able to process protein etc. as well, it makes sense. Not that I'm necessarily eating poorly, just that my body's processing the nutrients and vitamins differently. Boo. There's a mouth rinse called AMOSAN that comes in individual packets (box of 20). My dentist recommended this, as it's supposed to be better than Listerine. Basically, it helps reduce inflammation and swelling. It has helped, I have to say. He also suggested a water pick for more effective cleaning along the gumline, so no food can get stuck and cause infection. I hope these things help. Gum problems are a definite nuisance! >From: <teers@...> >Reply- onelist > onelist >Subject: Re: [ ] Gum problems? >Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 01:08:38 MDT > >From: <teers@...> > > >I do.
