Guest guest Posted June 2, 1999 Report Share Posted June 2, 1999 Weight gain in the face and belly is right! = I was on an increased dosage of pred the last 6 months for a Lupus flare. 20 then 40 then 20, and now I'm on 10 mg per day! I used to wear a size 30 waist in Levi 501's. Now I wear a 34 waist and relaxed fit too! My chin is quite full too. I have mostly been too thin and people always told me to gain weight. Now I look hideous to myself. Wonder if it will ever go away. It's hard to exercise when working all day and exhausted when I get home. Oh well...... Dianne A. My sister who also has an autoimmune system problem also had this problem when she was on pred. She keeps calling me and asking what size are they today and if I have to pay $100 per bra. She isn't nice. I told her she wished she had the deep deep valley on her shoulder like I do trying to hold them up all day. Prednisone causes increased appetite and metabolic changes that can result in weight gain and liver disease AND prednisone both can cause fluid retention ergo weight gain. Several of us who have been hospitalized because of AIH have lost considerable weight during a very short hospital stay as a result of aggressive treatment for the edema and ascites. I lost about 35 lbs., for example, in 5 days. Incidentally, at the time I was hospitalized I was not taking prednisone, had never taken it, and hadn't been diagnosed with AIH. I thought I was simply getting PDP (pretty darned plump). I saw bones on my body that I'd forgotten I had! But once I was steadily on prednisone I gained all the weight back and then some, plus all those other little ugly side effects. So, theoretically, your doctor is right. You do gain weight in your stomach - from ascites, caused by liver disease. And, prednisone can cause Cushing's Syndrome (moon face and a soft fat pad at the back of the neck.) But with edema, which is nearly inevitable, you will also find that your arms and especially upper legs will become huge occasionally and briefly. I've always had long skinny legs that I hated but I'll never forget the night I was getting ready for bed and saw that my legs had become enormous overnight. This condition comes and goes. , above all, take the meds. You know the corny old saying about having a good looking corpse? Who needs that? Appearances are so transitory and incidental compared to the the things that are really precious about being alive. We all change with time, even when we're healthy. Our society has placed an unfair emphasis on physical appearances but reality is that truly beautiful people radiate beauty from inside, and that's a goal that we all should aspire to. (Heck, I've been working on it all my life and if I never make it, at least I've had the privelege of being able to try.) You are so young and so much can happen. The disease itself is unpredictable and you have no reason to not believe that you will be one of those who do well under treatment. Also, the medical community is learning more every day about how to treat AIH and othe autoimmune diseases. But, it's much more difficult to recuperate if you allow your condition to deteriorate unchecked than if you halt the process before it gets too advanced. You owe it to yourself to fight AIH with all your heart and soul. You have so much going for you, I just know that you'e a winner. Tonight my husband's niece called (a death in the family, but no one close to us) and while she was talking to my husband she told him that she woke up the other night and one of her " boobs " had collapsed. Apparently she has breast implants and one deflated. I didn't know they could do that. I pictured her with one deflated breast hanging there like a collapsed balloon. Amazing what we women will do to look good, or at least to fit someone's idea of what looks good. My husband said he had to bite his tongue to keep from telling his niece that whatever she was doing that caused the collapse, she'd better not do it anymore. I do think that prednisone causes breast enlargement, but I'm also one of those who could do without it. Do you find that you get pain in your chest from the pressure of your bra on your ribcage area? I'm having a problem with that recently and it can be very, very painful. It's only on the left side. Zoobies comes from my sister Becki who lives in San Diego. She always says that I could have given her a little more of my zoobies so she at least have some. By the way Becki was the one who go married in San Diego when I went out there. I had so much fun. Her husband is from England and he is so sweet. I found out the day I was flying out of Duluth, that I would be in the wedding. I felt really pretty in my new dress the Maid of Honor and I picked out. My sister from Huston fixed my hair and I looked like a different person. I wish I had the energy to have my hair curled all the time like that and as for clothes I just hate to buy them because of my weight but I think I better start getting a few more things. I also would like more skirts and dresses. My husband told me today that I still have nice calves. I looked at him in shock. He hasn't said some about by body in a long long time since I've been sick. It made me feel really good that he noticed. Well, I hope your tests or your husband's tests came out good. Luckily, I was very close to my brothers but it's not the same thing when you're older. I haven't worn a dress for a year. I bought a very nice, slightly dressy pants suit type outfit. The fabric is Tencel and looks and feels a little like silk. The outfit is a pale lavender and very classy. Now I have to figure out where to wear it. Maybe to dinner with our son and his significant-other next weekend. The blouse is slightly see-through so I have to wear a tank top of some sort underneath. I have a black silk tank top from the olden days when I wore things like that, and I'll see if it looks okay. It will give me an excuse to wear a pair of expensive shoes that are going to waste in my closet. Please try to send a picture of you from the wedding. I know that all of us will enjoy " meeting " you in person. I'm looking forward to seeing your new dress and hairdo. That was sweet and sexy of your husband to comment on your nice calves. If he's like my husband, he's probably been hesitant to say anything about how you look for fear that he'll remind you of the physical changes you've gone through. Everything is great as far as my husband is concerned. In fact, if he didn't have the back problems he'd be in roaring good health. The Scripps cardiologist doesn't think Bob even had a heart attack and that instead it could have been acid reflux or another severe GI attack of some sort. But, generally speaking, Bob is fine. What a relief for both of us. We've had all the bad news we need for the rest of our lives! The weekend's almost over, but I hope that you have a nice Sunday. One of the photos was taken just before I got the final AIH diagnosis and I was feeling pretty sick. The other one is older and I look tired. It's not a fair photo because it's not very new. I don't have any idea when it was taken, but definitely not during the past 5 years. I'm attaching it for what it's worth. All it really shows is that I didn't always have a full face. I almost never let anyone take my picture because I freeze when a camera is pointed my way. Even professional photographers can't get a picture of me without a funny look on my face. Fatigue, I thought that was just being tired all the time, but since coming down on the meds. I am like you. I get tired I have to rest. I have never been able to lay down and sleep because it has always hurt, but now I find I just have to. It is what I imagined old people feel like as they get older. I didn't expect to be going through it because of the withdrawal of drugs. How are you doing? Great to put a face to a name. You look fine to me. Do you know why there is so much bloating in the abdomen. It is really embarrassing to me. My appetite has decreased with the decrease in meds. but the tummy seems bigger to me and harder. Any clues? I am really happy about the decrease in my eye problem since going on diuretics. Seems when there is no fluid in my feet and legs there is no fluid in my eyes. My eye doctor says he has never seen anything like it. He is amazed. I lower the dose 2.5mg this week, I keep you posted as to how it is going. I am trying everything to keep a positive attitude. Guest guest Posted March 14, 2008 Report Share Posted March 14, 2008 Hi! The only medicine we have in common is Neurontin, and I'm no longer on it. I am on Paxil plus pain meds and Lyrica. I've gained 20 lbs since the holidays! Mine, however, is from lack of exercise and over eating. I have finally made a real decision to do something about it. I know people react differently to medicine- what makes one person gain weight makes the next lose. As a nurse I used to see this all the time. A frustrating fact, especially when it's in the wrong direction. I HATE having to move up a size in clothes, feel yucky in the clothes I do wear and know this is bad for my back. I know it stinks that you've gained and it sounds like you haven't changed your eating habits. I found a web site yesterday that is free and gives a ton of support, has an easy way to track calories and all the nutrients, etc. Even though you may've gotten the raw deal, where as I ate for comfort, the end result is we need to get rid of the lbs. I suppose you could try eliminating meds one at the time, substituting for something else if your doctor will work with you. Did you see a clear change in weight after any one particular medication? If not, it may not be something you can remedy. Good luck. I hope someone else can give you specific answers about the medicines that will be helpful. Again, good luck!
