I have noticed also that some antidepressants have this effect. I was

prescribed Depakote (with nightmarish results) but have since found

something that works. It is best to exercise caution and maintian an

open relationship with the doc who is prescribing your meds. Just my

two cents.

Cherish and anyone on Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, or any other SSRI,

After reading what you said about Prozac and hypothyroidism, I decided to

look into it because the doctor just prescribed Prozac for me. She's not an

endocrinologist and obviously doesn't understand hypothyroidism. Here's

what I found:

Note on Prozac: One impact of prozac which is of particular concern is it's

impact on the thyroid. Eli Lilly, the company that produces Prozac, reports

that hypothyroidism can result from taking prozac, although the company

states that such cases are infrequent (see Manufacturer's Report listed

above). According to Henry

<http://medhlp.netusa.net/forums/mentalhealth/messages/30184a.html> Ford

Health System, " The product information of Prozac reveals that infrequently

Prozac may cause or worsen preexisting hypothyroidism. As hypothyroidism is

known to cause depression, it is important to have your thyroid function

checked. " According to

prozac> Shomon, author of Living Well With Hypothyroidism, " Taking thyroid

hormone replacement while taking the popular antidepressant sertraline --

brand name Zoloft -- can cause a decrease in the effectiveness of the

thyroid hormone replacement, and make your TSH rise. This same effect has

also been seen in patients receiving other selective serotonin-reuptake

inhibitors such as Paxil (paroxetine) and Prozac (fluoxetine). If you are on

an antidepressant or thyroid hormone and your doctor wants to prescribe the

other, be sure to discuss these issues. "

Since hypothyroidism is a common cause of depression, there is concern that

patients with hypothyroidism may be prescribed prozac to treat their

depression, which could in turn make their hypothyroidism worse.

If anybody else out there knows of any scholarly articles along these same

lines, I'd appreciate it if you'd send 'em to me. Or send me the link.

Thanks. Edie

Hi Edie - I've just written similar to , but T3 cured my depression

so I have no doubt at all that it was thyroid related.

I believe most of these occurred in a very small minority of total

patients; but it's confusing to say there are no side effects. Maybe

_you_ had no side effects?
