Guest guest
Hi Kerry, What diet and Vitamins would you prescribe for hypoT ?? thanks Puneet Kerry Ann Faithfull <kerry@...> wrote: Hi Again Mickey, I am sorry you have had to go through that............The first thing that comes to mind is the research on using iodine as a supplement to prevent breast cancer - since iodine is one of the building blocks of thyroid hormone it seem that there must be a connection. Here is the link for that article: http://thyroid.about.com/library/derry/bl1a.htm I also believe that it is important to gives both main types of thyroid hormone (T4 and T3) and if you really need it all 4 types (incl T1 and T2) which is pretty much only available in Armour. It can be a bit of an ordeal and a puzzle to work out what you need but with patience and persistence you can. Over time after many blood tests and from observing my health using a health log....I discovered that my body does not make much T4 but it does some converting T4 to T3. This means that I need to supplement nearly all of my T4 requirements - currently I take 200mcg and just some of my T3 because my body is converting some for me. So I take 60mcg of time release T3 per day. I can tell this from my tests because my Free T4 rarely gets to the top of the scale whereas my free T3 is mostly over the top of the range. So I can see that I am getting plenty of T3 but only just enough T4. I do not take Armour because I react slightly to something in it - I could take it if I had to but the synthetics suit me better. IMO your free T values need to be at the top or over the range before you will feel decent. That is the case for me anyway. And of course there is the whole issue of diet and supplements - how is your eating and what vitamins etc do you take? hope we can help, Kerry " Natural " Treatment Yes, Kerry, I do have reasons for wanting to change from Synthroid - they may not be good ones, but they are a concern. First of all, let me say that I am not overly knowledgeable about how thryroid glands work and the treatment for malfunctions, so to speak. Be it wrong or right, I pretty much accepted my diagnosis and began taking the medication the doctor prescribed - no questions. Just the way I was raised I guess. That attitude changed last year when I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer (node positive). Being a life-threatening disease I got off my duff and began doing a lot of research about the many causes of such a disease. As a result, I am now convinced that my breast cancer was at least partially an indirect result of a malfunctioning thyroid gland. Though my cancer was not hormone positive, in most cases it is, so hormones play a significant role in breast cancer. Though I had a positive response to treatment, the chance for recurrence is quite high. I want to do everything I can increase my odds against that. I am now trying to learn more about the thyroid gland (this forum is very helpful) and the treatment of hypothyroidism. I realize that I will have to take some form of medication for the rest of my life. My true desire (as I am sure is all of yours') is to get off the medication completely. Since that is not a possibility, I want to take the safest thing I can considering the cancer factor and the chance for recurrence. Sorry to go into such great detail, but perhaps more information will help with some of the suggestions I get from this list. I am grateful for all the opinions and suggestions anyone has. I have learned to research things for myself rather than relying on what the doctor says. Thank you so much for your concern and for your time. Guest guest
I have developed a regime over the last few years - I can't say that everything I take makes a noticeable difference - but I feel worse if I don't use supplements. My condition is a combination of Hashimotos, Adrenal fatigue and Chronic Fatigue - which I think I have from being untreated for so long. All my research and experience has led me to eat a slightly higher protein than carb diet with as much fresh organic food as I can afford (I grow some of my own veggies and have free range chickens so this is a big help). I hardly ever eat any junk food, fizzy drinks or store bought sweets and this has helped me so much to maintain a basic level of health. I try to drink a carrot juice each day. I don't drink alcohol as it just makes me feel wasted and I don't smoke (anything ) I like a cup or two of organic coffee or black tea - you have to have some little pleasures LOL- although I do enjoy my diet for the most part and only occasionally miss things I can't have. Drink lots of water! These are the supplements I feel are helping me: Vitamin C - at least 5 grams per day - is good for too many things to mention here but really helps the immune system. Selenium - 300 - 400 mcg per day - needed by the thyroid gland to produce hormone also excellent for detoxing heavy metals. iodine - 2 drops per day - also needed by the thyroid gland (some people can't take it) and possible cancer prevention Digestive enzymes - one per meal acidophilus powder - 1 teaspoon in the morning Vit B6, B5, B12 as well as a multi vitamin mineral powder - I take Maximum Wellness Formula from https://www.immunesupport.com I find their products very good and was recommended them by members of another thyroid board. Liver tonic - the liver is the most important organ - see The Liver Doctor website Adrenal Glandular support - low thyroid stresses the adrenals so it is very important to support them with nutrition and REST With Low Thyroid Function many of the processes and organs become quite sluggish - this is why it is good to take digestive enzymes, probiotics and a liver tonic. I know you are vegetarian Puneet so you would need to make sure you are getting adequate protein through combining your foods well (I'm sure you are aware of this). I was vegetarian for over 15 years but I finally had to begin eating some animal products because I was not able to utilise the protein from soy or legumes etc and I became very thin and tired. I do not enjoy eating meat from a moral and also spiritual perspective but I don't feel I have a choice at this point - and it definitely helps me a lot - especially if I can bring myself to eat red meat as this is the only thing that raises my iron levels to normal. That website above also sells an excellent Adrenal support product that I'm pretty sure has no animal products in it. Called Adrenal Energy. I hope this is useful to you, regards, Kerry " Natural " Treatment Yes, Kerry, I do have reasons for wanting to change from Synthroid - they may not be good ones, but they are a concern. Guest guest
Puneet, Kerry is right about supplements. My DO told me to take a super supplement with Folic Acid and also take Vitamin B-12. It does make me feel more energetic. I do have my good days and my bad days but that is mostly because of my RA. I'm hoping I won't be having one of my bad days tonight. We have a low pressure coming in. The supper supplement I use is put out by Nature's Sunshine and is called Super Supplemental. I hope you get to feeling better..........Joyce RE: " Natural " Treatment-Diet Hi Kerry, I myself am interested in taking vitamins and other suppplements. However,am not able to decide on which once. Can you please suggest some based on your own experience. thanks Puneet Kerry Ann Faithfull <kerry@...> wrote: Hi Puneet, I lost the first few lines of my letter somehow - I meant to add that I feel very much better overall from taking the supplements and in fact I think my health would be very much worse if I did not take such good care with food and supplements. Guest guest
I have not used Alvidar - it looks like a good blend of herbs though....I don't stress about the weight loss any more - I just know that when I am better my energy will help me to lose weight. This is not an excuse to eat what I want or anything - I'm very conscious about my diet......its just that I have tried many different things or weight loss and found it just made me more anxious which made me more ill. Best to focus on getting well first IMO Kerry RE: " Natural " Treatment-Diet I am trying to get some advice from someone about alvidar(supplement).I thought maybe you migh be able to give me some advice on it.Also I tried taking womens one a day with vitamin B-6 100mg(1 pill a day)but it didn't help me any.The B-6 was suppose to give me energy, but did the opposite. --- Puneet kumar <kumarpuneet2004@...> wrote: > Thanks very much for the info Kerry. > > regards > Puneet > > Kerry Ann Faithfull <kerry@...> wrote: > I have developed a regime over the last few years - > I can't say that > everything I take makes a noticeable difference - > but I feel worse if I > don't use supplements. > My condition is a combination of Hashimotos, Adrenal > fatigue and Chronic > Fatigue - which I think I have from being untreated > for so long. > > All my research and experience has led me to eat a > slightly higher > protein than carb diet with as much fresh organic > food as I can afford > (I grow some of my own veggies and have free range > chickens so this is a > big help). > I hardly ever eat any junk food, fizzy drinks or > store bought sweets and > this has helped me so much to maintain a basic level > of health.
