Wow I would LOVE to know if there can be side effects concerning the thyroid

with MSG. I ate some at a Chinese restaurant and thought I was going to die!!

I couldn't breathe ... dizzy and such.... I would love to hear if anyone else

had this problem... Thanks!

I just found this group today. Have not been diagnosed yet but by

all the things I have read it looks quite possible. I won't bore

anyone until I get back from the Doc. on Tuesday Mar. 12.

But I wanted to ask if anything has ever been discussed regarding

MSG, Monosodium gluatmate. I have buzzed thru the thread but did not

see any subject lines with that, so forgive me if I'm bringing up a

dead issue.

Thanks and take care everyone.

Debbie,

MSG has had a bad rep for decades. It was one of the first food additives I learned to avoid in the late 70s/early 80s whenever I went to Chinese restaurants. I would get reactions similar to what you describe above. One thing you can do is ask for your food to be prepared without it when you order. Also, you can frequent Chinese restaurants advertising "No MSG" on their menus.

So far as I know, MSG allergy has no connection to hypothyroidism. I imagine, though, that the allergy could be fixed with NAET, especially, if a person had a severe and life-threatening reaction.

I have the same problem when I eat Chinese food, but I thought it was because I'm hypoglycemic too! Between these two health issues I get real confused sometimes(not hard these days!) as to what is causing me to feel the way I do.

I know that sensitivity to MSG is a real problem for many people, but

I don't think it's related to thyroid disease in any way. I have never

had a reaction to MSG. I eat a lot of Chinese take out and I also use

MSG when I cook at home.

I know I'm sensitive to MSG along with Codeine and allergic to

Aspirin, Penicillin and Ibuprofen. It gets interesting. And I

started taking Flax Seed to boast my immune system last month. Now I

saw a couple message that mention that is not good for

hypothyriodism. So I stopped that until I find out if I am

hyopthyroidism or what is happening to me. Like one big roller

coaster of life.

Check out www.msgmyth.com for a great site dealing with MSG. Has

some great links to other sites that are helpful.

Celeste I tried one 500 mg tyrosine.........well I thought I was having a

heart attack after a while! Now I'm thinking I need a little adrenal

support, so I am going to look on the web for Standard Process adrenal

support. I have had a trial of cortef and it was too much. I do take a

zillion B vitamins, C, cod liver oil.

Gracia,

Wow! You might find that if you take tyrosine that you will have to

stop taking T3. Another good supplement and one that works directly to

strengthen the thyroid gland is guggulsterones. Take a look at

http://www.qfac.com/diets_weightloss_appetite_suppressants/guggubolic2

..html for more information about them.

I would recommend caution before considerating supplanting any thyroid medicine with a vitamin supplement. I took tyrosine for YEARS (along trying a huge list of other alternative health practices and supplements) and it never helped me well enough to help me get well the way I have finally been feeling on actual thyroid medicine. There just is no substitute for the thyroid hormone and you can only get that from a prescription. I wish I could say otherwise as I have been a firm proponent of alternative healing methods the majority of my life. But in the case of hypothyroidism, I've found that nothing really helps like the medicine.

YMMV,

Kathy,

I have ordered some and expect to receive it sometime this week.

I have not tried it previously, though.

,

I wouldn't recommend not taking T4 with tyrosine, since it takes both

T4 and tyrosine for the body to make T3. But if a person is already

taking T3 then the tyrosine might be too much (or vice versa).

Hi Celeste, I don't think I will substitute tyrosine for T3. I do love the

Armour. It was such a battle for me to get thyroid at all, but I am

thinking now that my adrenals are a little sluggish. I will check out

guggulsterones, thanks.
